User Manual

BIM Utilities2025 is a plugin for SketchUp designed to work efficiently with standard IFC exchange files, allowing collaboration with other project stakeholders.

The main advantages are:

  • Viewing information in any IFC viewer without needing a modeler or SketchUp. This is especially useful in Trimble Connect, where you can view the model with its tags and complete data.
  • Automatically tagging elements in deliverables or drawings in LayOut, enabling you to tag dimensions, legends, and any custom value added via the plugin.

Icon Functions and Descriptions

Each icon’s functionality is explained below:

Brief Description:

Adds quantity information to a model component previously classified as IFC.

  • Can be classified via entity information or the IFC Manager plugin (recommended).

If you have a component classified as IFC and want to add a set of parameters with dimensions, this icon will add a Pset_QuantityTakeOff with dimensions.

The following values are incorporated into two parameter groups, one for use in LayOut and another for IFC viewers:

  • GrossVolume: volume of the envelope (may not be desirable if the component is rotated and edges are not orthogonal).
  • NetVolume: net volume if the component is solid.
  • FootPrintArea: footprint area of the component.
  • NominalPerimeter: outer perimeter of the footprint.
  • NominalLength, NominalWidth, NominalHeight: length, width, and height dimensions.

Brief Description:

Automatically adds quantity information to all model components previously classified as IFC.

  • Can be classified via entity information or the IFC Manager plugin (recommended).

This functions like the previous icon but without requiring selection; it searches for IFC-classified components and incorporates their dimensions. Processing time may vary depending on the model size.

Brief Description:

Adds custom information within a parameter group to selected components that have been classified as IFC.

  • Can be classified via entity information or the IFC Manager plugin (recommended).

You can add custom information to components, which will be exported in the IFC file if exported via the IFC Manager plugin and can be viewed and tagged in LayOut.

Brief Description:

Displays the dimension information and IFC properties of selected elements:

  • Magenta: edge lengths
  • Red, green, blue: boundingbox dimensions
  • Black: face area, outer perimeter, and solid component volumes
  • Corner: sum or totals of displayed measurements.

This icon displays selected elements’ dimensions on the screen. For example:

  • Edges: Raw edges will show their lengths in magenta; if multiple are selected, the total length will appear in the top left corner.
  • Faces: Displays face area and outer perimeter and boundingbox dimensions; selecting multiple faces will show total areas and perimeters in the top left corner.
  • Groups/Components: Shows solid volumes and envelope dimensions for selected groups/components; selecting multiple displays total volumes in the top left corner.
  • IFC-Classified Components: Displays parameters on-screen without needing to open component option windows.

Brief Description:

Deactivates dimension display on the screen. This icon toggles dimension visibility off.

Brief Description:

Toggles the display of IFC properties, retaining only dimensions.

This icon toggles IFC property visibility on the screen. This icon toggles dimension visibility on and off.

Brief Description:

Generates a tag for each IFC category or classification in the model and assigns model elements to the appropriate tag. Saving the model first is recommended. This icon analyzes model components, assigning all IFC-classified components to a tag matching their IFC classification.

Brief Description:

Generates a CSV file for each IFC classification of selected elements, including values added with previous icons:

  • Dimensions (Ifc Q icons)
  • LayOut Mark parameter.

If you need a table of selected element values, this icon generates a CSV file per IFC classification in the selection. The CSV includes dimension values (if added by the plugin) and the LayOut Mark value. This file can be dragged into any LayOut page to provide additional information for deliverables.

Brief Description:

Creates the following components from selected faces:

  • Room/space with the appropriate tag and entered height
  • Floor with corresponding tag and entered thickness
  • Ceiling with corresponding tag and entered thickness.

Selecting a face corresponding to a room’s footprint in your project, such as an area, space, or room, prompts the following values:

  • Room Height: desired room height from floor to ceiling.
  • Floor Thickness: desired floor thickness.
  • Ceiling Thickness: desired ceiling thickness.

Components for the space, floor, and ceiling are generated from the surfaces and assigned the appropriate tag.

Brief Description:

Renumbers selected components based on drawn alignments. Useful for numbering spaces or hotel rooms, parking spaces, etc.

Frequently, generated groups/components do not follow a logical visual numbering. For instance, rooms in a hotel or parking spaces may require renumbering based on position. This icon allows you to renumber selected components and specify a path for the numbering order. The path is created by drawing edges that touch components in the desired order. You can assign a name to the renumbered component and select the starting number.

Brief Description:

Replaces names of groups or components in both name and description fields, including unnamed groups.

This icon opens a window where you can search for text in group/component names and replace it. You can choose whether to search by name, definition, or both. For groups labeled as "Group," selecting the “Empty” checkbox will assign a name to them, as their name and definition fields are actually empty.

Brief Description:

Creates a scene (right, front, and top views) of the selected component, adjusted to the selection’s dimensions. Useful for generating details or legends in LayOut.

If you need a customized view of an element, this icon creates a scene with an orthogonal view of the right, front, and top sides of the selected element at maximum size. This is useful for generating door/window carpentry or furniture specs.

Brief Description:

Generates a grid in the model to facilitate modeling, allowing you to select guide spacing and height.

This icon creates a grid that serves as a guide for model generation. You can define the grid's total size, horizontal/vertical guide spacing, and height. The grid is assigned a corresponding tag and locked to prevent accidental deletion.

Brief Description:

Lists IFC-classified elements and those without classification in the model.

This icon provides a list of IFC-classified and unclassified components for model review. It prompts you to purge components to avoid analyzing elements removed from view but still in the model.

Brief Description:

Copies the selected component’s name to its definition field.

Sometimes, components have non-matching names and definitions due to being generated as groups and then converted without modifying the definition (e.g., "<Group38#1>"). This icon copies the selected elements’ names into their definition fields.

Brief Description:

Searches the model for elements with an IFC parameter matching the entered value and creates a separate scene with these elements.

Still in testing, this icon creates a scene with elements that meet specific IFC parameter conditions. For example, you can create a scene for elements where “IsExternal” equals “true” or for walls where “Mark” is “Wall type 1.”
