Sneak peak: Fog

Postby solo » Sun Feb 12, 2017 4:44 pm

For those that may be concerned that things have slowed down with Thea4SU here is a sneak peak of a feature I have been wanting for a while. There are other things in the works but this is one I really enjoy, even if it's just a novelty to many to me it's so damn cool.

I have been given permission to share this one feature, it should be available in the next update scheduled for March.

Really emotive. :thumb:

Is this going to be a preset of sorts? Or will it require quite a bit of experience to put in to play?

That looks like beautiful fog! Nice for the interior too. I think it has more practical use in everyday presentation workflow than many realize. But with those settings, I wonder how you did the low fog layer effect.

I set the top level to 2 meters, like in this I set it to 1 meter.

Nice one! this looks like a cool addition and v. pleased to hear other stuff is on the horizon :D

Are render times on par with using a comparable medium box arrangement?

How does this differ from the existing "global medium" function?

The only difference is that it's auto set. No fuss, no hassle, no endless testing, perfect interactive render refresh on Presto MC. A pleasure to work with.

There's only 3 days left in March... so when's the update going to drop? Very exciting.

There definitely is an impact, but so far it has not been that bad, hard to give a definitive answer as it varies by scene.

I wished I knew, I was told March, so your guess is as good as mine, it does feel close however.

Solo,
I see that some have asked about you about rendering times for the fog feature, and the general consensus was that it adds time, but dependent on various factors. Since I have no personal benchmark to go with at this moment, could you please share how long it took for the images you posted.

I played around with a sample scene from Thea's website and about half an hour of time the fog was perceptible, but not as pronounced as in their image, nor the images you posted. I have an i5 quad core 3.3mhz processor and an Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card. I used the Presto MC engine.

Is 30 minutes not enough time? Does the fog thicken/build with more processing time? Or is it negligible after a certain point?

I'm asking because the streetlight image with the figure seems pretty foggy, in a good way.

Re: Sneak peak: Fog

Postby whiterabbit » Sat Jul 21, 2018 4:51 am

I posted this over in Thea but haven't as yet had any response.

I love the fog/medium capabilities as a way to bring more drama into renders but I'm still a little lost. So just wanted to get some clarification as it pertains to sketchup use. The recent dropdown menu in the Thea tool/materials which has "cloud" looks to be a "shortcut" to setting the parameters in the "medium" settings in the main thea materials editor, which is how we did things awhile back.

In their example where they have used a box to enclose the scene and given it a "medium" materail it says to assign the medium material to the camera only, but previously I would assign the materials to any lights as well..is this not necessary now? or should the global medium material be assigned to all lights and cameras.

Also, how is this different than using the Global medium/custom medium in the environment tab of the thea sketchup render window? as opposed to making the box container?

Is "fog" only recommended for larger exterior scenes and custom medium for ...interiors ?

Lastly, and this may just be a glitch on my system. But I have noticed now that if I change the name of the sketchup material in sketchup (as I used to do fine - usually assigning a prefix to make finding light textures more easlily) that the Thea material picker will no longer be able to select it , it just clicks off of it.
