[Plugin] XRay Toolbar

[Plugin] XRay Toolbar

Postby daiku » Thu May 15, 2008 2:40 pm

Another simple little Ruby I wrote but use every day. This one is just a small 2-button toolbar that Toggles Xray and Toggles Perspective view. Icons could use some work, but here it is. Place all three files in your plugins directory. CB.

Dear Clark,

Could you explain why you find this script useful? The X-ray view already exists as a button on a tool bar, and most people work in perspective view as a matter of course, so....

Have I missed something?

Kind regards,
Bob

I can imagine being able to turn xray on/off using a single button would be quite useful if you dont use any of the other view options (wireframe, shaded etc.) just so you can try and keep a bit of screen space available.

Dear Remus,

Sounds plausible, but I use the other views too and so I tend to have that tool-bar up and running. Just curious, that's all.

Bob

Hi Bob. Maybe it's just specific to the type of work I do. I model complicated structures with mortise and tenon joinery (timber framing). So its very useful to be able to quickly turn xray on and off and peek inside the timbers to see the joinery without changing any other style settings. CB.

Dear Clark,

I am always peaking inside things and so I might give it a go. I am already using your rot90 tool. Very useful! I like the way it rotates a component/group about a central axis rather than a corner. I also enjoyed playing with the script so that I could rotate any angle I liked, which brings me neatly to my next question. Do you think you could modify the script so that one could enter the rotation angle in a pop-up window. The default could be 90, which is your rotation of choice.

Kind regards,
Bob

Bob:

While this could certailny be done, I think it would take away from the utility of the thing: A single keystroke to rotate. I think others have already written the utility you're taliking about (mover.rb?), plus, the built-in roate tool lets you type the angle into the VCB. Someone has already sent me a modified version that supplies 3 commands to rotate 90 around any of the three axes. I've urged him to post it. CB.

Dear Clark,

You are probably right. Simple is often best.
Thanks for replying.

Clark, this is a good idea for a script. I can see it being very useful when drawing joinery as you and I do. Since your plugin wasn't available when I first wanted a quick way to switch back and forth, I set a keyboard shortcut (I used Q) to toggle X-ray view on and off.

You know, that's an even better solution. I actually developed this at the request of a student, but the shortcut key is the way to go. Sincere thanks for pointing out the obvious! CB.
