[Plugin] FredoTools::ReportLabelArea - v2.1b - 11 Nov 17

Postby fredo6 » Sun Sep 11, 2011 12:40 pm

ReportLabelArea is a standalone script which provides several services about Areas:
  • Reporting: Compute and display the area of the selection or the whole model, by materials, by components and groups, and by layers. Display is done in a Web dialog box, with possibility to print and Export in CSV format.
  • Browsing: Indicate the Area of faces, components and groups by mouse-over in the model
  • Labelling: Create and Edit text labels with Areas
For all functions, there is a choice of Area formatting (unit and decimal), regardless of the default unit of the model.

This follows a request by vanderlm.

ReportLabelArea is now installed as part of FredoTools.

See the main post for this plugin for Installation

No user manual (see section Quick Start and Videos below)
  • Language: English, French
  • Menus: by default, it is installed in Tools > FredoTools with 2 submenus: Report on Areas and Label with Areas. It also appears in the Contextual menu when there is at least one face in the current selection
  • Icon toolbar: Fredo6 Tools. By default, the 2 icons are not shown
  • The plugin is free, for private and commercial usage.

Reporting on Areas

Browsing for Areas and Labelling

Reporting on Areas
  • Call the Plugin on the selection (main menu or contextual menu “Report on Areas”). If there is no selection, ReportArea will operate on the whole model
  • A web dialog box appears showing the report
  • You can change the formatting of areas, unit and number of decimals
  • Report is available by Material, by Layer and by Container
  • You can print the report and export it as a CSV file

Browsing the model for Areas
The best is to follow the video
  • Call the menu “Label with Areas”).
  • Mouse over the model to display the area of faces, groups and components. You have several options, like "select single face, as opposed to surface", "select compoents / groups recursively or not"
  • You can change the formatting of areas, unit and number of decimals at any time
  • If you click on elements, they are stored in a temporary selection and the total area of the elements selected is displayed in the top dialog box

Creating and Editing Labels with Areas
  • Call the menu “Label with Areas”).
  • On a face or Container, Click and Drag to create and position a new label
  • You can drag the text of the label around
  • You can also move the anchor (mouse over it, a small yellow circle appears, click and drag)
  • to change the formatting of the label, change the unit / decimal in the dialog box and click on the label to update it
  • to Edit the text, double-click on the label

ReportArea 2.1b - 11 Nov 17: This release fixes a bug in ReportLabelArea when exporting CSV in non-English language

ReportArea 2.1a - 09 Jul 15: This release fixes a major bug. Now the calculated area takes into account the glued component in Cut opening mode.

ReportArea 2.0a - 19 Dec 11: This release includes a Reporting with a Web dialog, by Material, by Layer and by Container. It also includes the Browsing and Labelling features.

ReportArea 1.1a - 11 Sep 11: initial public release

Do you mean
- compute total area by layer?
- For each layer, gives the details by Material and by container?

Re: [Plugin] ReportArea - v1.1a - 11 Sep 11

Postby baldaman » Sun Sep 25, 2011 9:01 am

I mean compute total area by layer.
I explain: I am doing a big project. I put each floor's top face on adifferent layer corresponding to the affectation of the floor (for exemple: exhibition, administration, library etc...). Each time I want to check the total area of library's floor for exemple, I select one face, right click, and go into context menu and choose "by layer" to have the sum of all areas of library's floors top faces. I do that 40 times a day.
I think that if we can make a report of all areas of these faces we can produce an automated area table for elements of program.
Of course it could be done with materials, but we often want to give the same material to all the floors. The differenciation comes with layers.
Switching to "color by layer" mode gives a more analytical vision.
"color by layer mode" = analytical, programmatic
"textured mode" = realistic, rendering.

Sorry for my frenglish.

I mean you are providing a set of tools and I have to install them all at one time. But I have already installed some of them and made my own icons for them.

Actually I am using sutool of Wikii as a manager of all my plugins. And this set of combined tools doesn't support that.

I konw I can also control display of the icons through your LibFredo6, but it would still be wonderful if you could continue providing these tools als seperate plugins at the same time.

I understand.
I am not a user of Wikii's SUTool. Can you tell me how you bind the icon / command to the Plugin.

I can try to offer an interface which is compliant so that you keep seeing the plugins as standalone.

Fredo

PS: I regrouped the plugins to minimize the footprint in SU, (i.e. have a single menu item). I also provides a Quick Launcher.

Hello [b]Fredo6.

Forgive for my bad English.

I use many yours Plugins. I give an appreciation on these workings out.
I address to you with the request, to make calculation function on length;
Millimetres running
Centimetres running
Metres running.

Probably to execute it?

I thank you.

Fredo. Great Tool.
One question. The sorting is by either Material or by Layer.
Any chance to add By Layer then by Material?
Something like this?

Layer1
Material 1
Material 2
Material 3
Layer2
Material 1
Material 2
Material 3

Regards.

Is there any way to automatically update existing labels if the area has changed? I could not find a way to do so, but perhaps I am missing something

Thanks for such an amazing plugin btw.

I thought about it and there is a way. I hesitated because it obliges to store some information as attribute of faces and use an observer (notably not very stable in Sketchup). This latter issue made me hesitate as the plugin could have bad side-effects even if you do not use it at all.

One possibility is that I introduce a "refresh" option to update all labels. Maybe I'll do it in a next release.

Thanks for the suggestion

You are most welcome. A refresh button but be ideal in my opinion.
I never expected the labels to be updated automatically anyway since that would probably have a negative impact on performance (just wild gessing).

Hi Fredo,

I downloaded this tool as part of Fredo6 tools pack. Makes Sketchup one of the most useful tools for architectural design. I constantly use it to report areas and update area schedules of projects. I now use sketchup as a 2d tool more and more. Bye autocad!!!

Thanks a lot!!!

Re: [Plugin] FredoTools::ReportLabelArea - v2.0a - 19 Dec 11

Postby vapross » Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:48 pm

Hello, guys.
Finally I've a first post.
Fredo, thanks a lot for your tooling! It really helps!
My question is on exReportArea principle, that I'd like to turn to my needs. I used ReportArea (now ReportLabelArea) for the interior design. It works great. And I just checked this new one.
I'm not a Ruby pro, and maybe you should send me to the Ruby forum section. Now I'd like use SU as a mass-modeling tool, and it seems to me there's no simple plugin to do it (if there is one, please, post a link!). Revit or ArchiCAD methods sometimes are a bit clumsy in mass-modeling. And the cost isn't nice for a such simple task.
What I'd like to get a data structure in csv from SU model is as follows:
- group
-- name
-- material area (e.g. 3 mats = 3 area values)
-- layer
-- volume
-- etc

The data structure appears to be an hierarchical one, because I'd like to get the parameters of each group/component from my model. Materials and naming are the core of the way of information mgmt I use within SU.
Almost the same for a Component. Actually if I get a long unformatted list of data, I could sort it in Excel.
Now I have no idea which code pattern to use -could you guide here? Any advices, links? I bought last week a brand-new book by Alex Schreyer, but it didn't help me.
Thanks in advance!

Just a note of thanks, Fredo, for a typically powerful multifaceted, super-documented and pleasing to behold tool-set. If I could master your tools alone, I would consider that quite a worthwhile accomplishment.

Thanks very much for the encouraging appreciation. This one came from a user request some time ago. It's a little bit complex because there are many options and situations where only the user can decide (like selecting a face, a surface or a component). So I have to leave the options open and provide some documentation.

Hello everyone,

I was trying to generate my first report on areas from a project I have and I came across this question.

Is it possible to report the area of a face minus the hole cutting component's areas attached to the face?

The entity info window reports them but I didn't find a way to do that on this tool.

Thank you fredo for all the unbelieveable tools... box stretching... perfect!
