(scroll down for the update 12 years later)Starboard hull of catamaran. 50 feet long. 8 feet across. Almost done. Next will be the center cabin. You ol' sea dogs go easy on me. I struggled with much of this and can't remember how I did some it. Like the curved open rear boat deck? No idea how I did the one side and couldn't replicate it for the other side. So it was group, dupe and flip. No motor, rudder, running lights, dock cleats or railings yet hullB102010Psm.jpg hullB102010Ssm.jpg hullB102010Paftsm.jpg hullB102010Saftsm.jpg

Nice work, Ecofeco. It looks very precise. I hope you'll make the entire cat. We can make it into a render competition then btw Sang really gets to go places, doesn't he? edit: typo

Thanks Martha. I will definitely complete it, although it may take some time as I'm still a relatively new user. I've been teaching myself for the last year, but I've made maybe a total of 12 models. It probably won't be as detailed as some, as I'm working from pictures and I'm not a sailor by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a great exercise. Yeah, that Sang! He really does get around!

Okay, NOW you all can start telling me what I doing wrong. (because I know I am) I'm also thinking about making this sail instead of fully motorized, so the thruster you see is mainly for channel/harbor maneuvering. hullB102410.jpg

Any suggestions? Obvious mistakes? I think I have the rudder and thruster misconfigured or designed wrong.
Does anyone see any glaring errors?
Thanks.

Hi Eco, nice looking Hull there, I would suggest removing the Kort nozzel as ive never personaly seen one on a Cat before,or such a small one, but your rudder assembly looks fine.

Ah! Thanks! Is there something else that can be used for channel and harbor? A small standard prop perhaps?

Well your size Cat suggests it only needs skill to moor,im pretty sure larger cats have bow thrusters but if you say is there anything else,im assuming you made that Kort nozzle with the idea that it was a azipod?

Well I blew it. I've realized the scale is all wrong. And the way I constructed it, I'll have to start over. And the deck railing is overdone.
At least I can save the rudder and forward top hatch. And I know what I'm doing this time around. Which ought to mean better geometry as well.
Live and learn.

Very interesting. Where do you come up with the plans for this type of stuff?

Thanks! I just search google. Images usually. Sometimes I have to search a lot and even then, I often have to settle for the next best thing of what I had in mind. Also, I just use the free ones I can find. But there are quite a few websites that have great pay for plans of almost everything.

Roughing in the bulkheads. I have just one bulkhead to go by, so I'll have to fake the rest.

Going to be a lot of adjusting before I skin. The hull profile slopes from the top middle down to both fore and aft. I had to pick this one, didn't I? Oh well, it will look more interesting this way.

Most of the bulkheads placed and now to just refine their profiles and set up the final aft bulkhead, then find the true hull curve.

Thanks! Gonna hold off for a while. Local weather has had 30 degree (F, 15 degrees C) swings over the last few days and my head hurts.

How I'm preparing the hull for skinning. I have no idea what I am doing. I'm experimenting. Still trying to figure out the best approach due to all the curves.

Sigh.
Crazy busy with the day job the last two weeks and no end in sight. That's why I've just been doing easy renders.
I'm getting impatient to get back to this.

How I'm doing this:
I made three copies. The first one on the right is my baseline. As I make corrections, it becomes the new baseline and replaces the previous model.
The middle one is where I make corrections, based on:
The one on the far left where I test and find the problems.
Current issues are getting the bulkhead heights to line up exactly with the hull profile.
I intend to use Soap Bubble or Curviloft to skin the hull. At worst, hand connect all the lines to make the hull surface, like I did with the Nadesico.

Yep. Non-connected lines and endpoint alignments were the problem.
I ended up using Curviloft for each compartment.
After making sure the bulkheads were the exact height of the corresponding point on the hull profile, I erased the hull profile lines between each compartment one at a time and made a new line to ensure the endpoints were connected, then used Curviloft to skin. One section at a time.
The bow was tricky and required a lot of small arcs for Curviloft work. The tail still needs some fiddling, but it's nothing major at this point. I'll fix it pretty quickly.
The hull curve is not perfect, but if you didn't know, you can't tell. I'm good with this.... this time.
