Returning to SketchUp - Changes?

Postby Jack_Cade » Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:10 pm

Hi,

I am going to be using SketchUp again after a few years absence.
The last version I used was in 2016.
I have installed the latest 2021 version.
On the face of it, not a great deal seems to have changed.

Are there any significant changes I should be aware of?

Also, I used to use quite a few plugins which always seemed to me to be essential not optional tools.
Problem is, I can't remember them all. Getting old!
The names: Fredo6, TIG and thomthom stick in my mind.

Has Trimble plugged (no pun intended) the many gaps that SketchUp needed?
Or is there still a need for some essential plugins.
If so, what plugins would you say are essential?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

Jack Cade.

There are quite a few changes since SU2016. One obvious one will be the change from Layers to Tags (that's not new in 2021 but new since 2016.) The rules for using them have not changed. That is, leave Untagged (Layer 0) active at all times, leave Untagged (Layer 0) assigned to all edges and faces. Only give tags to objects (groups and components).

You can give tags dash styles if you wish. You can now make that setting in LayOut however so you don't have to do it in SketchUp. LayOut has a bunch of features added since 2016.
You should probably go to sketchup.com and look at the release notes for the last few versions of SketchUp to see the changes. there's quite a bit more.

As for extensions, do you still have SU2016 installed? If so, you should be able to see the extensions you have installed for it. If you used the Sketchucation tool to install extensions such as Fredo6's in SU2016, you should have a "bundle" available to install. Just install the Sketchucation Extension Store tool found under Resources at the top of this page, sign in and click on the gear icon at the top. Then click Bundles.

No, I don't have SketchUp 2016 installed.
That was on a works machine.
I remember spending many weeks on configuring it just the way I wanted it.
Also installed quite a few plugins but only keeping a few that I found essential.
I think one was "PurgeAll".
There was another one called "CleanUp3"

Forgot my old SketchUcation account so I have just created a new one.
So no record of my previous plugins.

Thanks for your input.

Well, install the Sketchucation Extension Store tool as I mentioned and you can easily search through the extensions hosted here and install them. Of course there's also the Extension Warehouse hosted by SketchUp which you can access through the Window menu in SketchUp.

Make sure you installed SketchUp correctly while you are in the process of setting things up. That involves right clicking on the downloaded installer and selecting Run as administrator. If you didn't do that, you should do it now. After clicking on Run as administrator, choose the Repair option.

When you look in either source for plugins you can search plugins by your favorite authors and probably recognize the ones you had.
