Blender forum in sketchucation

Blender forum in sketchucation

Postby L i am » Fri Feb 08, 2019 4:23 am

Hi all, I posted a suggestion in another thread so sorry if this seems like a duplicate. I am posting here to start a new thread.

"Just a thought bubble, might it be a good idea for the Sketchucation executives to consider creating a new forum in sketchucation specialising in transitioning from Sketchup to Blender? This may reinvigorate Sketchucation which has taken a beating since Trimble took over Sketchup. This may be a great help for people transitioning or simply for Skethup users to use the qualities of both programs. It would certainly work for me. Anyway like I said just a though bubble"

There has organically been a lot of chatter on Sketchucation about Blender of late. So am asking others who think this idea may have some merit for you to please hit the like button.

technically, it would be a Blender sub in the sketchUcation forum

it probably couldn't do much harm, it may a be a great platform to get to know the workflow from SketchUp to Blender (eevee FTW)

I cannot see any harm in it and believe it would be a positive. I find the attitude of many blender users on other fori to sketchup is so bad that nothing can be achieved so something that can improve work flow in sketchup would be a massive boost. Increased traffic here is not guaranteed but hopefully that will happen too.

+1 for a Blender sub forum

Chipp's done a great job with his tut's but i'd appreciate seeing more discussions regarding SU <-> Blender - 2.8 will no doubt draw more attention from SU users too.

Last night after reading with horror the su teams responses to criticism about the "upgrade", (if we're in an arms race with the users, if we gave you more power you'd only use it and want more? What the flying ****.)

I tried once again to use blender. (I've tried once or twice a year since about 2009) this time, I get it. 2.8 is the blender update we all wanted...

So count my vote for a blender forum.

On a technical note, this would have been more appropriate in the Ideas Box and Board Issues subforum. Rich would probably notice it faster and everyone can still add their thoughts on it.

Great idea this new thread....
Just like Khai, I have tried many times to use blender but the unfriendly UI was sort of too much for my little brain :(
It seems that with the 2.8 update and Chippwalters tuts a new era is coming.
About the workflow from SketchUp to Blender is there any other way than exporting first from SketchUp to .obj and then import that file in blender?

Sure why not? Blender may be an answer to my slow rendering woes.

I'm Blender-curious as well, but I've been waiting until the stable 2.8 release to dive in.

Chipp's advocation for a SU Model / EVEE render workflow makes a lot of sense to me, and with the 2.8 UI changes it provides a productive way of dipping our toes into Blender.

My only question is what are the min. system requirements for Blender 2.8 / EVEE? Anyone know? (I briefly tried looking on the Blender site a while back, but didn't come up with anything. Maybe I missed it, or maybe they hadn't posted yet)

I'm on a 2014 13" Macbook Pro with IRIS 5100 integrated graphics, so I doubt I'll be able to run it under my current setup. I have been considering buying a gaming PC with a fast Nvidia card (at least a Geforce 1070) as a rendering machine ...so this might be the impetus to bite the bullet and go for it!

I am using a custom configuration for my 2.8 Blender interface by Vaughan Ling aka 'HeavyPoly'. I got it as part of a tutorial here https://gumroad.com/vling (I bought the container ship tutorial). I believe you can get the config for free on his website however.

Now on day 4 of learning to model and it's going very well so far. It will be a perfect companion for SketchUp I think, hopefully I will be up to speed in a month.

Okay, I found a good intro into Blender ., shows the new UI. Looks so much easier than all previous versions.

That is a good one to start with and that young guy (Blender Guru) is a very impressive individual.
I am daunted by Blender though, however the UI is Soooooo much better than it used to be. A hell of a lot of work must have gone into it :!: I have been playing with Blender including watching tutorials for a total of about 5 hours, I had to go and do a model in SU instead of shaking in the fetal position in a corner. It makes me feel so stupid :?

(Edited) The following link is Blender statistics apparently it is the most used 3D modelling software ever and is downloaded 16000 times a day with 6.5 million downloads per year!!!!! and that is going on 2017 stats.

Just the native render options, alone, in this makes Sketchup look a little sad.... :(

I know this is perhaps a bit over the top, but this link shows what blender can do Ultimately, all within the program

Something to keep in mind, all software, just like any analog tool, is only as good as how well you learn how to use it. The correct hammer and chisel in untrained hands will reveal a driveway from a block of marble instead of a David.

Of course thats why I started my post with, "I know this is perhaps a bit over the top" I was trying to convey the program's potential not necessarily our potential to produce this standard, of course ;)

I usually hop from sketchup (make) to Blender, and it is rather painless, apart some quirks. Blender accepts .dae rather well. Instead I've had problems with exports from Sketchup to DAZ Studio, which is strange, since both programs use .dae as the default format. Any idea?

I'm betting only part of the model comes in.

and I'm thinking, you make your models multi coloured...? and I'll say of you keep them default white they load fine..

yup ran into that when I tried it. seems (from my limited understanding) SU puts out a DAE with each colour as an object and DS has issues with the way it's doing that.

Some of us just need a driveway ( I could use a new one, concrete not marble). And a forum is helpful for learning how. Not much help in getting a David though (I'd need a TON more to get there myself :-P )

No, for the moment it makes "easily" (depends of users skill ;) animations of parts of Bim files!
But sure that in a few times, it will be capable! ;)
