General discussion about Animator for SketchUp
by jonorman » Fri Feb 02, 2018 1:13 pm
Hi.. Been testing Fredo`s Animator plugin and find it very cool and useful.. Have one major issue tho. I`v seen the tutorials and are trying to make an animation. Editing groups and components, saving start with the position saver, and entering the "Clip editor". I make one movement, run the clip, looks nice Ease the movement and are happy.. Save the data (with the plugin save button) and exit tool. When i go back and want to edit the clip it is all gone.. It is as I`ve never made the movement The saved position is there but not the movement I`v made :-/ Any suggestion on what I`m doing wrong ?? I have SU 2018 with the latest Animator and Fredo lib Thank you.. Edit: The Animator (.animator) file is looking good It has a lot of text in it (opend with notepad to have a look )

Normally, the Save button in Animator also save the Sketchup file.
However, since all changes are in the undo stack (storage as attributes in the model), you may have unsaved if you used the Undo button after exiting Animator.
All data are saved in the model. A copy is done in the external .animator file at the same time, but it's really for accident. Normally, when you start Animator, it checks which of the model attributes or animator file is the most recent and prompt you if there is a difference.
Note that the model is self-sufficient as it contains all data of the animation.
I don't know exactly why you lost data, but may be related to the case I mentioned.

This only happens on my workstation at work. I`v tried it at home and here it works just fine.. I recon this may be an installation issue of som sort.. I`ll try uninstall and reinstall the plugin and the LibFredo library to see if this sorts out the issue..

Good morning Fredo6 Well, the installation theory i had, seemed to not be correct.. I uninstalled both Animator and FredoLib and reinstalled them both with latest version.. So i start SU, save the model as i.e Animator test. I make a cube, turn it in to a group, then start Animator. After completing the animation, and when i want to go edit it, it is all gone. Like I did not save it or something. I`v added a Gif video to show the process When using animator at home on a laptop, it works just fine

@jonorman
Seems like there is a bug somewhere.
Could you turn on the Ruby Console and see if there are errors showing up.
Thanks

I noticed in the .gif when you save the animation and before exit the name of the (clip?) is Film 1...see first screen grab 7A1D1F2D-96F7-4B3D-A2D4-900784770156.jpeg After you re-start Animator the “name” is Film (new).....she second screen grab. 148A6E60-C8CB-4952-B41D-23AD63395141.jpeg I haven’t used animator for a month or more, and not by no means an expert......but is your “Film 1” perhaps available in the drop down? Hi there! I've started recently to use Animator, which i think is an amazing tool, but experienced some bugs. I'm using SU 2018, with latest version of Fredo Library and of Animator. Working on MacOS High Sierra (latest version). The main problems i experienced occurred when trying to create a new view (camera icon): it switches the view to the top view from far out (so far that it is impossible to see the model). It is then impossible to create an animation. The program crashed many times as well.
I hope this helps and that you can help
Many thanks in advance

1) Could you post or PM to me the model so that I have a look. I don't have a Mac, but maybe I can help. 2) For the crashes, do you mean bugsplats with exit from Sketchup? Fredo

Could you do the following: 1) Create you animation 2) Save it 3) Send the model skp file to me before you re-open it, so that I can inspect if the saving went OK. Thanks Fredo

The model does not contain an animation. So very strange... For the .animator file, you can change the extension to .txt. This is just a text file. Then you can attach it. By the way, 1) When you save, could you open the Ruby Console before to see if there are error 2) Is the place where you save model on hard disk, or on a box-like place? Fredo

Good morning Fredo.. I`v made a new anim test... Ruby Console was running the whole time (and nothing showed up there) . I`v saved a copy as at 3 different stages.. After the transition is created and tested but before exiting tool, then after exiting tool, and one last after reopening the tool. Also added the .Animation files. All in a .rar file attached. I save the file on my windows desktop..

The Animator file is created correctly, but data are not saved to the model file.
I need to investigate.
Just one additional check. When you save the animation (blue disk button), can you check that in the Undo menu of Sketchup, you have "Animator: Save data".
Also, before exiting, could you invoke the Maintenance Dialog box and check that the "sequence 1" is displayed in the list.
Thanks
Fredo

I mean Create the animation, Save it from within Animator (so blue disk turns gray) and check the Sketchup Undo label/tooltip. By the way, could you type the folloiwng command in the Ruby Console: Sketchup.active_model.pathThis should return the file path name of the SKP or nothing. Thanks Fredo

It's a little bit of a mystery!! I think I have to send you a special version of Animator with traces to see what is going on. Could you PM me your email address, as the rbz file is above the 2 Mb. By the way, could you also check in Tools > Fredo6 Collection > Animator > Default_parameters.... that you have set up the auto-save. Snap17.png Thank you very much Fredo

Was this issue solved? My issue is similar. Movements and cameras I put in disappear when I re-open the file?

Hi Fredo! First of all thank you for this amazing plug in. And hi forum!
I came back to a model I was working last night and there's nothing saved in the Animator-Clip Editor, but I think I probably didn't save it as I was very sleepy.
So if the clip settings are not in the Clip Editor that means that I didn't save it? Or there is any way to find previous clips? Hopefully it's saved somewhere in a folder in my PC?
Many thanks!

All Animator information is saved within the model. So, if you retrieve a previous version or the last backup save (.skb), it should be there. This assumes however that you did save the animation at some point.
