Example - Chief Architect model to Skp - Kubity

Postby facer » Fri May 20, 2016 3:57 pm

An example of Chief Architect to SketchUp then to Kubity.
Upload to Kubity took approximately 20 min.

Workflow for Chief users (at present)

> Chief model is exported to 3ds

> Import 3ds file into SketchUp.

* Check glass is clear or transparent - use SketchUp translucent materials

> go to website https://www.kubity.com

> drop SketchUp file into website

Kubity coverts the file to a 3d model on screen and assigns a link.

Chic Cottage was assigned the link:

Great! thanks for sharing.
Just out of curiosity, what is the size of the .skp file?

They are different beast.
With Kubity, you can scan the QR Code to have the model available offline on your smartphone or tablet.
There is a way to walk inside in 1st-person mode with gravity and feet on the ground. And it works with huge models with millions of polygon. https://medium.com/@JohnontheGO/26m-polygons-3d-file-automatically-brought-to-cardboard-in-seconds-9044c4b49804#.pq21o63tl.
Sketchfab is great for other things, like having 3d in the browser on mobile or inside the facebook feed for example.
I guess/want/think they will both evolve their way and be nicely complementary in the future :)

Chief > Skp > Kubity
model: Dutch-Cottage_imperial
file size (Skp) 29MB

Glass Windows in Chief
Glass windows in Chief have two layers, outer layer deleted and
material changed to opaque glass, in my case to Thea "thin glass".

Orientation and viewing:
As previously discussed require scenes to allow easier navigation.

Little man view
Viewing with little man would be aided if the "angle of movement"
could be reduced

Good lighting and material representation, close to Chief Architect's views.

Looking forward to new update of Kubity!

Notes on comparison of SketchFab to Kubity

At present the choice as I understand it is between SketchFab and Kubity
for architects and building designers etc.

Learning programs is costly in regards: time ($$), emotional committment
and intellectual investment. It is wise to hang back and see who is
going to be the front runner. How many programs have come and gone and we have
had to write off our investment.

Kubity is the "new kid" on the block and their is a lot that has to be
clarified in regards model size limitations, how many models can be upload for free
etc. and what will be their cost structure, a Pro version or how are they to generate an income.

I use SketchFab and I like it but to have Private and password-protected models
there is a cost of $120 year. I also find it is a very in depth program that has to be
mastered to get the best results in regards backdrop, material, and lighting.

Kubity has an immediate advantage for a "free user" as the "Link" acts as a password,
and security is to be improved as per their statements.

I am getting a better result straight from Chief into SketchUp and then Kubity.
I have requested that the Chief Architect file format be one of the file types that can just
be dropped into their website. Worth a try:)

Navigation is an issue (use the little man icon to set a position for viewing a scene),
and set views and annotation points are required like SketchFab have.
Set views are to be addressed by next month through the use of "SketchUp Scenes"

At present it looks like Kubity is focusing on the architectural market so it will
be interesting to see how they evolve and position themselves in the market place.

Chief Model Albertson > SketchUp > Kubity

LINK
https://www.kubity.com/p/xnMLyo

Chief Model 19.6 MB

SketchUp Model 36 MB

TIME TO UPLOAD
SKP FILE TO KUBITY 8 MIN 15 SEC

Landscape around house cut back to give better perspective
Large landscape area distorts vertical angles.

Issues! - Window glass has two panes, deleted outer
and changed glass material to Thea Thin Glass.

Question?
How to make the glass material in 3ds transparent.
This would allow export from Chief to 3ds, update the glass material, and then zip the file
and Upload to Kubity. The model I create with this process does not have transparent glass.
The 3d Model in 3ds zipped uploaded to Kubity without any other issues.

I just created a ticket so a developer will investigate this specific point.
I guess the best way would be to support natively Chief Architect but if there is an immediate workaround I keep you posted.

The model won't open for me...just the spinning circle. I've asked about this before but haven't received any help in sorting this out. I've turned off ad blocker which has helped in other situations but it doesn't work here. I've looked for other sources of what may be blocking the player but can't find anything. I am always on the lookout for a better method to interface with clients who generally aren't tech savvy and my go to method to date has been sending a 3d PDF. Kubity looks like it has great potential but the fact is I have never been able to open the model in Firefox (latest 64 bit version). If the model won't open for me, what are the chances that my client will have trouble? The models do open in Edge but I have no control over which browser my clients use. Really looking for a solution.

Thanks KrisM for the feedback. We know exactly your issue and the solution is on our side. It's about memory and we've been working on it: it'll be fix soon, maybe not with our next update (next week) but the one after (end of july).
