A good water/ocean tutorial (GPU render)

Postby jonorman » Tue Mar 31, 2015 6:18 am

Hi.

Anyone have a good tutorial, guide for making a good Ocean/lake etc. Mine seems to come short in all the ways.. Repeating in texture, not to good looking..

What textures to use, reflections to set, etc.. Where to find good ocean textures.

I don`t need displacement, normal, bump should be good enough.

Could really really really need some help an guide lines on this one.. So if you know and have the time, please share..

thank you

There is a simple trick that can work well with the tiling effect on materials.

In the texture lab duplicate you bump image and rotate it slightly, say 20-40 degrees.

I'd also consider using displacement for the best results. Using a different texture for bump and displacement will also help to hide tiling. It's a bit more work, but I think it's worth it.

No problem....it's looking good :thumb: .

There's a little pixilation in the reflections, so you might want to find a higher resolution displacement map or maybe blur the texture to soften it a little.

For large water area I use a large bump map 5000 x 5000 seamless.

If you want to try it, you can, let me know when you have it so I can delete it as it's 27MB
