Basecamp leaks?

Re: Basecamp leaks?

Postby Aerilius » Tue Oct 23, 2012 5:56 pm

Here are my notes from the first day:

John Bacus:
  • SketchUp is simple, inexpensive, free, flexible/extendible
Bryn Fosburgh of Trimble:
  • brought SketchUp into Trimble
  • Trimble started with GPS receivers
  • 66 acquisitions in the last 12 years
  • hardware development, now more software developers today
  • acquired Zeiss !
  • emphasis on many markets: agriculture, land information (cadastrial surveys), transportation and logistics (fuel efficiency), building and construction, civil ...
  • Why did they acquire SketchUp:
    • SketchUp is flexible to cover many markets
    • architectural component
    • were talking with Google how to integrate with SketchUp [maybe even before Google wanted to sell???]
    • using it as a platform, user community, for being able to build solutions for various other markets
  • SketchUp transformed Trimble: more flexibility, more focus on end-user.
  • Trimble has 33 offices world wide. SketchUp team will stay at Boulder
    will keep the free version
  • more differenciation between Free version and Pro versionS (architecture, civil market)
  • distribution model, distributors/resellers get greater portfolio of (Trimble) products
  • developer network
John Bacus:
  • staffing up the team
  • New Development Projects:
    • SU8 had many Maintenance releases that contained a lot of valuable new things (shadow bug, rbz, 92% Collada compliance)
    • new, annual release schedule (SU9 in early 2013)
    • doing more than desktop software development [server infrastructure, mobile ???]
    • transition took much time, reinstall the build system etc.
    • 3D Warehouse is Trimble property operated by Google, new things like in Showcase
      • rebuilding it from scratch
      • more emphasis on re-usable components/meta data ("content" warehouse)
      • WebGL, without browser plugins
      • we can get embed code
    • SketchUp as a platform:
      • SDK, Ruby API, Dynamic components, 3D Warehouse
      • 45% of Pro users use 3rd party plugins
    • explosion of Ruby
      • chaos with toolbars, install process, discoveribility, destabilization (crashes)
      • better install process with rbz
      • hooks for plugin sites/repositories, but more will follow
      • new Developer Console today released (built to be extended), Github
      • TestUp today released (Github), unit tests, automated testing, for API bug reporting
      • Code sharing: opensource code for STL im/exporter on Github/sketchup-stl (Apache)
(Bre Pettis: "I didn't think that would happen!")
  • keeping SketchUp free, affordable for Pro users, not more complex than necessary, making it faster

All in all it seems with SketchUp and Trimble, two have met who share the same goals (simplicity in the core, affordability, extensibility for all markets).

Interesting!
■ 45% of Pro users use 3rd party plugins

I would think that would be 100%.
How do you use SU-pro and not use plug-ins, at least the free ones?
Maybe some seats just do grunt work?

64bit doesn't seem to be a priority. I'm not too worried about that though, when have you ever experienced SketchUp running out of memory? (I'm excluding when using rendering engines, because that's a design problem of the rendering engine itself, which they are responsible for.)

Fred Abler of Form Fonts has a nice rundown of his experience at Basecamp this year on the Form Fonts Blog.

http://formfonts3dmodels.com/

Anybody here meet him? I worked for the man for 3 years and still have not met him

Yet, there is zip, nill, nada in terms of videos coming out of 2012 basecamp. I remember in '08 so many videos came out, it was great! Anyone knows if there are plans to release videos on some of the presentations?

In 2008, BaseCamp was held in the main GooglePlex (Google HQ's in Mountain View) and there were all the resources: staff to record, equipment to use etc.

Even in 2010 it was much "poorer" and now as the SU Team is more or less independent financially (as far as one can grasp the hints), they obviously could not afford this kind of luxury.

I saw Daniel Tal getting recorded by a digital camera but other than that I noticed nothing else.

I found the Tal video on Vimeo. Is this the presentation he gave out at basecamp?

This is not Daniel Tal's presentation from BaseCamp -- His presentation at BaseCamp was about Landscape terrain modeling and featured many great Sketchup plugins. Fantastic video on Rendering and I am looking forward to Tal's Sketchup book coming out. Thank you very much Omar for posting this find at vimeo!
Tal's Basecamp presentation was recorded -- so we hope to see is soon. Please Daniel...!
