Up dated Porsche 550 Speedster

Up dated Porsche 550 Speedster

Postby Mike Amos » Mon Jun 29, 2020 1:19 am

Essentially a stripped out racer for road circuits and informal circuits. Nothing extravagant engine wise, a 1.6 litre flat four with a footprint of 132" X 66" with not much in the way of weight should give reasonable shove and all round disc brakes should stop it well for the twisty bits. This is still a WIP but I like to render to check for body alignment etc. The inboard front wheel arch shows an extension towards the cabin with an opening outboard for dissipation of heat from the braking system. I would usually have a bonnet opening to extract air from the front splitter which can add to downforce and improve steering at high speed (Reduces wandering especially in sidewind situations).

I agree - and maybe a darker colour or any SkUp screenshots to recognize this cool shape better

The perspex screen has been a headache which has taken a good few hours to sort but it is 'close' enough for now. More of an interior too now.

Yeah, that's what I run into when I start creating a bunch of curved surfaces.

Interior, you can see some of the shut lines and panels that are beginning to appear and the clarification of layout for internal components.

Digging deeper into elements of the body with hopefully opening sections to show engine and suspension details. I also used one of Majid's car paint colours to get a better result from the render. Down to Majid and Twilight render for any kudo's.

I have taken on board some comments about colour which have enhanced the amount of feedback I get from these 'surface development' renders. In this instance, a very slight 'grey' makes a better white than pure white. I hope I am not boring folk but I do get a lot of benefit from feedback, it is very much appreciated.

Hats off to you for some great modelling! I tried to model a car a long time ago and soon gave up, it was the curved surfaces that got to me.

I sometimes use a feint fabric texture on walls/ceilings for the same reason. It helps to reduce the 'moire'? effect in renders.

Thanks folks, very much appreciated and I'm sorry I did not reply earlier. Stuff going on. Back at this today with a few more improvements and sorting shut lines and hinges opening lines/arcs etc. Not got the hydraulic lines etc in yet either but I will get there.

Man!
I've never been good at car modeling in Sketchup!
On the other hand I've tried Blender3D and even easier alternative: Wings3D!
Everything (Almost everything) is in right-click menu and has a set of good subdivision tools included. Here is what I got in few minutes and 4 times of subdivision.

There is nothing wrong with that Majid, good start. I wish I could get on with SubD etc and Blender. Just has not happened yet.

Thanks Mike. The pro of the Wings3D is the fact that if press "Shift+Tab" it previews the subdivided mesh without really subdividing it and it's simple logic. The con is that it is a solitude island... No similarity to other apps and totally different from Blender3D, slow progress etc... Maybe trying Blender3D worth it.

One day my feeble brain may get there with Blender which would make my year tbh. Still moving on one small piece at a time. After the bonnet decal I shall go back and finish the doors with shut lines and door pulls etc.

I really admire your job! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: I've never been good, or let me say have been so lazy, to model such a complicated form in SketchUp.
