With Parametric Modeling, a new free SketchUp plugin:

  • Do parametric modeling thanks to a Nodes Editor similar to Unreal Engine's Blueprints.
  • Modify entities parameters at any time and see result instantly.
  • Extract shapes, points and vectors from active model.
  • Import schema from a file. Export schema to a file.

Looks really cool, and a lot of work ahead.
Since you GPL it, do you have plans to move development to github or so and let other cool folks contribute to the progress?

Yes. I will publish to GitHub the source code of this plugin in a near future.

Very cool!
It would be great, if this could be made non-destructive / as modifier. But i suppose it's not possible with SketchUp to store the operations in the model/component. Maybe this could change in the future with LiveComponents...

Good plugin. But I have the suggestions.
1) Tab Number: It has an extra cell so we can name it
2) Tab Draw *** : It has an extra cell to Hide/Unhide
Thanks.

hi Samuel,
Great plugin! i really hope this grows into something like GH for Rhino.
now, I am no coder, and I have absolutely no idea how this thing works under the hood. But, would be it possible to click in the SU window to enter values for points instead of typing in the x.y.z coordinates?
thanks!

Hi Jacob, Thanks! I'm thinking about a "Parametric Modeling > Extract Point From Construction Point" entry in context menu when a construction point is selected in SketchUp window. This would be a shortcut to add a "Point" node.

Re: [Plugin] Parametric Modeling - v0.0.2 - 22 Mar. 2021

Postby samuel_t » Mon Mar 22, 2021 4:05 pm

What's new in 0.0.2 version?

- More node types are available in math domain: "Multiply", "Divide" and "Calculate". With this latter, one can write complex mathematic formulas. See documentation to learn more...

- Boolean operations were introduced in Nodes Editor. Unite, intersect and subtract parametric solids thanks to brillant work of Julia Christina Eneroth. Note these operations work on all SketchUp versions, including free ones. Warning: these operations can slowdown SketchUp.

- One can structurate parametric model with "Make group" nodes.

- One can write queries to target specific parametric entities with "Select" nodes. See documentation to learn more...

- Two entries were added to global context menu in Nodes Editor: "Remove all nodes" and "Show or hide minimap". The minimap should help you to navigate more comfortably in large schemas.

- A label can be applied to each node of type "Number".

- One can use "Paint" node type to apply a material to groups, after a selection for example.

- Node state is reflected by a color: red means it's invalid while green means it's selected.

- To remove a node, you need to right click on it then select "Remove this node". No more double click...

- One can access plugin documentation from Nodes Editor toolbar.

- A shelf, a decking on pedestals and a wall fence with pillars are available in examples schemas. Thanks to Jack Tenrev and Simon Joubert for these schemas.

- Materials referenced in parametric schema but not existing in model are substituted by random colors.

- Layers/tags referenced in parametric schema but not existing in model are created.

- Result of "Add" and "Subtract" nodes was corrected. It was incorrect in some cases.

- Nodes Editor tooltips display also in old SketchUp versions such as 2017.

Download latest Parametric Modeling plugin from the SketchUcation PluginStore.

Postby samuel_t » Fri Mar 26, 2021 12:00 pm

What's new in 0.0.3 version?

- Node adding process was enhanced: one can place new nodes quicker!
- One can extract vectors and points from active model via context menu.
- In "Calculate" nodes, one can use rand function to get random numbers.
- As soon a material or a layer is added or removed: Nodes Editor reloads.
- A door is available in examples schemas. Thanks Simon Joubert for this.
- Although it's not recommended, one can read/edit .schema files easier.

Hi Samuel,

First thank you for this stunning plugin :o
Just downloaded and installed v0.0.2 (v0.0.1 was working OK, apart from several Bug Splats) but this time the dialog is blank. Any idea ? (maybe I must uninstall v0.0.1 prior to installing v0.0.2 ?)

Hi Didier,

Try to remove it manually then install its 0.0.3 version (released today). Tell me if problem persists.

Samuel:

I don't understand this plugin, but I've just downloaded it and donated £5 because it looks like an amazing development. I saw your thread on the SketchUp Community Forum - and I spotted the word Eneroth in the description. It has all the hallmarks of Trimble royalty.

A couple of suggestions, if I may. 1) Place plenty of strategic links to the relevant Sketchucation Forum for those of us who struggle with this site's navigation. 2) Provide users with more options to contribute. I find SubscribeStar user friendly and non-intrusive, for example. Getting £5 out of me is like getting blood out of a stone, but it is something I quite like to do, and appreciate it when people overcome their natural shyness of pointing out that free stuff isn't entirely free and give me options.

I'm just some old bloke who talks too much. Apologies for that.

Congratulations and best wishes for the success of your gamechanging plugin.

Robin.

Hi Samuel
I have a couple of suggestions.
1) When we choose a wire, it is brighter to make it easy discriminate from.
2) We need a node to Hide/unhide block (such as Box, Cylinder,...).
3) We need a node like Number node but it is List style
Thanks

I am trying to create a universal nut and bolt modeller using the amazing Parametric Modeling.

I've been trying to "Subtract" threads from a cylinder.

If I route the group "Move" -> "Subtract solids", as screenshot, then the first prism is subtracted.
If I route the group "Move" -> "Make group" -> "Subtract solids", the "XYZ" group is ungrouped.
If I route the group "Move" -> "Select" -> "Subtract solids", then various interesting things happen.

I really haven't got the foggiest idea how to use "Select".
Is there somewhere I can get a bit of background on how to use it?
