I like that idea. That is one to implement on the next round. I'd also like to have better support for perpendicular lines coming off of simple arcs and circles.

I realy need a feature request tracker so that I have them all together for when I get ready to re-write some of these scripts! THanks for the great suggestions everyone, on all my scripts.

Hi Chris, another idea....
Have you considered adding components and groups to this tool? as with your custom face tool, another option that I think people would find 'components perpendicular; tool handy....
Maybe another tool though as this is a 'perpendicular face' tool after all.

Cheers,

chris,

i have downloaded the latest version posted above and am having a number of problems:
1. on the text it says 1.1 not 1.2. could you have posted the wrong script?
2. the custom shape does not explode after it is placed;
3. all the faces get oriented parallel to the red axis;
4. control does not work as described;
5. the up arrow does not work as described.

i am on mac. could there be some incompatibility?

Hmm, interesting. I know there were problems. Do you have sketchy physics installed? I know Chris implemented some things in SketchyPhysics that clash with the arrow keys. I'm not sure if ever fixed it. Perhaps try removing sketchyphysics if you have it.

If not, there was also a Mac issue, but I fixed that early on I think. But perhaps the wrong version is posted. I'll try to look into today for you.

Re: [Plugin] Perpendicular Face Tools (UPDATED 26-03-09)

Postby Chris Fullmer » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:00 pm

I have a feeling that I never got around to updating this script again after I found out that Macs and PC arrow keys are registered differently. I'll need to look at it again and figure out how to change it. I thought I had already, but it must be another script. Perhaps I remembering that I did it on shapebender, but never got around to fixing this one correctly.

Sorry Edson, I'll try to get it working.

Also, I don't think that I had planned on exploding the face once it gets put on the end of the line. If I explode it in the script, then if there is geometry in the way, it could clash. So I leave it up to the user to explode on their own, once they have verified that the shape does not intersect with other geometry.

And I checked the version number. It is the right script, I just forgot to update that line in the code...sorry!

And as for th3e red axis, there is a good chance that the up arrow keys are messing things up before the script aligns the face. I am really anxious to start coding again, I just need to get in and do it. So give me a few days and I'll see if I can bust out a new version of this.

7.1 bug perhaps? Entering in a fractional value for face size for the circular tool (e.g. 6 3/4") in the VCB results in the circle only coming out to 6" radius.

And I use this thing all the time... help me out!

Is this new to 7.1? Or was it like this before? It might just be me not coding it correctly. Try using a decmial instead of fraction for now. I think that should work. I'll look into when I get a a chance.

And if it is a 7.1 thing, that is very interesting. I know that CadFather found some issue with units. And units and decimals and fractions are all connected.

Hi there,
Just wanted to drop in to say thank you to Chris.
This is a wonderful tool. :thumb:
I use it to position mesh lights perpendicular to the camera line (for rendering).

The video in the first post is great. I especially like the sound of your wife doing the dishes while you recorded it. :)

I found a bug. Nothing happened when I use "perpendicular circle" tool to place a circle whose radius is smaller enough, for example 10mm. Because of nothing happened, I did it many times, then it crash. Is there any way to fix this??

Chris, does it only works with FACES?? Why not with 3d objects too?

I then tried to create SINGLE faces, and make them into a component, so I would place them with your plugin and then replace ONE component with a more complex 3D object... but it also didnt accept using the component... the face must be exploded :(

Cant you change that?

I don't have time right now to fix it how you would like, but as a work around, you could also install my components to faces plugin. That will apply your component to all selected faces, which would probably do what your looking for, for now.

Hi Chris,

I installed v1.2 and the script doesn't show up anywhere, not under the Plugins pull-down, or your separate sub-list under Plugins.

I'd appreciate your help.

Thank you. Ben

Postby Chris Fullmer » Wed Apr 07, 2010 5:04 pm

Hi Ben, sounds like it is not getting put in the correct place somehow. There should be a single file called clf_perpendicular_face_tools_loader.rb in the main plugins folder. And a folder called clf_perpendicular_face_tools that has all the other files it in (clf_perpendicular_face_tools.rb, circle_xx.png(2), square_xx.png(2), and star_xx.png(2)). So make sure everything is in the right spot and let me know if that helps. If not, we'll keep trying,

Chris,

My folders are configured just as you say and no-go. I even deleted all the files and reinstalled the zip file.

I'm puzzled too, because on another computer it works just fine. :?:

I appreciate your help and love your script (on the other computer ;) )

OK, one last thing to try before we dive into deep troublshoot mode.

This is one of the few scripts that I wrote where I toyed around with the idea of disabling it by default. So just go try to enable it in the preferences menu - Window > Prefences > Extensions and make sure it is turned on. If that does not do it, then I'll PM you a new tweaked script that will output errors for me to look at.

Hi Chris, I've had some trouble with your tool.
Using a millimeter template i was not able to get under 25,4mm radius for the circle tool
for your information, here is the code from the console.
Error: #<TypeError: reference to deleted Entity>

Not sure what it means, but when i draw a circle (even bellow 25mm) on the ground plane and then use the star tool there is no problem. It works.

Dear Chris,

I used your tool extensively in the beta test of fredos Curviloft. It's a great combination. but at times appears a little error. Some objects are rotated to 180 degrees. At two or three objects, this is not a problem to turn the objects by hand.

Re: [Plugin] Perpendicular Face Tools (UPDATED 26-03-09)

Postby Chris Fullmer » Sun Jul 11, 2010 2:14 pm

Hi Charly, I never did quite get some of that stuff worked out. When I wrote this I knew very little about vectors/ But, I was aware of the possibility of it adding unwanted rotation to faces. So I built in the ability to rotate a face immediatly after placing it by using the up arrow key.

So if a face is rotated wrong, hit the up arrow key to rotate it 90 degrees. Hope that helps,

Chris
