Speed Modeling Challenge #46 - Hawaii Tribute (1 Hour)

Postby boofredlay » Mon Oct 31, 2011 5:22 pm

For this challenge we salute one of our own.
If you have not heard the news yet, Honoluludesktop passed away recently.
There is a thread about his passing here: viewtopic.php?f=179&t=40819

Box, our winner of the Halloween Part Deux Challenge suggested:
Box wrote:I thought perhaps a rather broad subject, Hawaii, as a small tribute to Honoluludesktop.
Something to catch the spirit of the islands, or simply an item found there.

The recently modified rules are still fresh so please read them.

The Official SketchUcation Community Forum Modeling Challenge Rules:

  • For this challenge you will have 60 min. maximum for modeling and adding textures.
Your time spent is on the honor system, if you cheat you are only cheating yourself.
  • You can use an unlimited amount of preparation time for thinking, sketching, researching, collecting textures or scratching your head but NOT FOR MODELING. Again, this is on the honor system.
  • From now on only one (1) entry will be allowed so choose you subject wisely and make it count.
If you post up more than one entry it will be removed.
  • For your submission please provide:
    1. A textured image.
    2. A hidden line or xray/hidden line image.
  • Your image is to be SketchUp output only.
    • Yes you can use the SketchUp Styles.
    • No you cannot post a rendering using Twilight, Thea, Vray etc…
  • A maximum 1000w x 800h pixel image is allowed.
If you post any larger your image will be removed.
  • Finally, as enthusiastic as some of you are about rendering and sharing please do not post any renderings in the gallery or post models in the component forums until the competition is over as they could solicit votes.

The textured image will be used for the voting element of the challenge.
The community will vote for their favorite entry once the
competition has ended and the winner will choose the next theme.

Have Fun!

I didn´t have the time to add gills. And also forgot to add nostrils

Here's my entry... Just tried a simple technique for the coconut tree.. It renders really well. As the leaves are a png they show some unwanted textures in the sketchup, but render fine. Will put up some of the images after the competition is over. It took me around 20 mins to model. Have made 3 variants of the tree and written honoluludesktop in an ode the late sketchup guru. May he R.I.P.

Dear Honolulu, & dear friends of SCF..

I'm sure this project would had pleased you by its gentle spirit.... and maybe you have known and possibly visit it :!: :!: :?:

House for Listening to Rain (2011) from Lynne Yamamoto

http://www.honoluluacademy.org/art/exhibitions/11910-lynne_yamamoto_house_listening_rain
The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu
House is a place to sit and attend to the garden with all the senses. Nearly all the lumber came from Re-use Hawai'i, and from one house. The stumps were lent by the University of Hawai'i Art Department. Corrugated metal roofing was chosen to remember plantation houses.

a sound of rain ;)

enjoyment of building together :P

I have worked on the drawing, following the real process (without probably the same enjoyment to build into such a group)

Unfortunately, despite a big preparation work, I have reached in One hour only a little part of my project
I'm afraid the challenge is over for me

My best friend thoughts to you, to your memory.

This is such a beautiful idea, Simon.
But in the other hand, I would´t expect nothing less from you.
Thanks for that sound of rain - I´m going back to bed :)
