Speed Modelling Challenge #31 Lamps

Speed Modelling Challenge #31 Lamps

Postby remus » Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:50 pm

Lamps

The rules:
-30 mins max modelling time
-unlimited prep time (thinking, sketching, looking for pics etc. NO MODELLING!)
-I will ask people to judge the models on time taken to model, quality of the model and originality of the idea.
-Multiple entries are allowed, keep it sensible though.
-Please provide a wire frame shot of your model when you post.
-Sketchup output only (and as much as i know you love rendering your models, it would be appreciated if you could hold of posting them in the gallery until after the comp.)
-Any texturing should be done within the modelling time.

Comp closes 5th October at 6.00 PM BST.

As a little extra, could i ask people to post their models so others can reuse them? Its entirely optional but im sure many people would appreciate it.

Good luck :)

If you have concerns about sharing while the comp is running, you can do it afterwards as well (best would be the Components forum IMO).

Dave, anyone is welcome to enter, doesnt matter if your first few arent very good, everyone has to start somewhere.

James, the idea to share the models wasnt mine, it was adam's (the winner of the last comp.)

Charly, nice model! You dont have to do the one in the picture though...

Something a little flower power and yet modern minimalist.

Curviloft and some spheres.
30 min.

okay i gave it another shot. how the hell do you draw an oval in sketchup?! or how do i even make a sphere?! i had to cheat on that. i googled "how do i draw a sphere in sketchup" and got this google page

http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/ ... swer=39024

which basically admitted it's practically impossible and suggested i download one from the internet.

anyway, if anyone has any suggestions at all, whatsoever, on things i could have done better please let me know! this is how i'm going to learn! also this took me about 40 minutes but i'm submitting it anyway!

Easiest way to make an oval is to scale a circle.

Here's how to make a sphere...less than 30 seconds...btw, looking up tutorials is NOT cheating, but its smart to do it before you start modeling :)

Nice entries guys!

Davesec, if we'd extensively share modelling tips and crits in this contest thread I think this would be a bit off topic. You could start your own thread and surely would get lots of input. Sent you a PM.

Nice lamp. Loose the rendering however... read the rules. That is unless the light source is baked in.

Alright, here is mine just under the wire.

A fast and dirty version of Frank Buchwald's Steampunk Lamp 09. Tons of detail I was not able to accomplish, mainly the cords which make this lamp so cool. Anyway, here it is.
