Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesCastles
-30 mins max modelling time -unlimited prep time (thinking, sketching, browsing the internet etc. NO MODELLING!) -I will ask people to judge the models on time taken to model, quality of the model and originality of the idea. -Please try and keep your submission to one post in this topic, i.e. make a post and use it for all your prep work as well, just edit it each time you need to add stuff. -Multiple entries are also allowed, keep it sensible though. -Please provide a wire frame shot of your model when you post. Deadline is 16th of January. Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesFirst attempt

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesHmm... a question...
Am I allowed to use SU tree components? Don't stop the progress Bar!

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesBrilliant. I think I like the wireframe better than the color

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 Castlesa small question; in the rules it says
Does this mean that if there are 2 models that I think are just as good and original as one another, the one made in less time should get my vote? Modelling times were never included in the voting poll before...
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesYes, thats right. The reasoning being this is a speed modelling challenge, therefore more speed is good.
This has always been there, though. From the first challenge:
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesSo, if it's one of the rules, why is modeling time not mentioned in the voting threads?
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesFair point, i'll make sure to include it in subsequent voting threads.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesPretty pleased with this one, although the geometry is a little messed up around the door.
Lots of thanks to jim for his randomise TIN plugin, very useful for getting half decent water ![]() Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesRemus,
This 'Speed Modelling Challenge' is a very nice and interesting topic. Apart from that, I would also like to learn something out of it. Some contributions are quite easy to understand and on others I would love to see a little more elaboration. As an example: Fred's Christmas-tree was my favorite for nr 5 and I would really like to know how he modelled that in no more than 30 minutes. I am just very curious, eager to learn and would like to know how it was done.I tried to do it myself and it took me a bit more than 2 hours to come to something close to his tree. Where and how did he find those 1,5 hours? Oké, he probably has hi-pro SU skills, might have a more powerfull computer and good knowledge of all kind of rubies, but still... I would love to learn how to gain speed in my SU modelling-procedures, also out of this "challenge". Don't read this as if I would have any doubts about given modelling time, I really believe in the honesty of all participants. In fact: it would be nice to turn the results of this Speed Modelling Challange into sustainable "How to speed up your SU skills"-tutorials, available for review. I am very well aware that this approach will take more time than just a SU-model in 30 minutes from all participants. Still, I believe it will add very valuable info to our forums. Just some thoughts, greetings,
Ton
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesWell....30 mins sure ain't alot of time but here is my not to scale castle. Looks more like a fort but there wasn't enough time to do a center tower. Never the less, it was fun trying! Next....
Cheers, Jeff Have I mentioned how much of a laugh I get out of some of the Signatures on here!
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesMan, these are looking great.
Ton, I will make a tut of the Christmas Tree. You will not believe how easy it was. Edit: Ok Ton, I uploaded a tutorial here.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 Castles
Same here! I really love the castle from Click Draw, that would be the one that i would like to draw but in half an hour i would only have one wall ![]() Qué sais je? there is still so much to be learned...
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesOk,
I think I got a tiny eenyweeny carried away here ![]() ![]() Damn Challenges! ![]() What I had after about 30 minutes was this....nothing much.... I was happy with that footbridge, but the castle was a laugh: After that.... I got appetite to do some more. Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 Castleskwistenbiebel, that is a beautiful model! how the fragile bridge spans all the way to the castle, supported only by these crooked poles... fantastic scene!
and of course the render of your big model is stunning. Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesKwist.....The "King" of the castle! Awesome job sir.

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesI hope you can read it. The sign says "my home is my castle" Time needed for the Caravans: 9 Min Time needed for the Sign: 8 Min Time needed for the Banana skin: Another 5 Min Time needed for the Grass (Copying and so on): ca. 8 Min Time I couldn't model because it lagged as hell: around 40 Minutes Another 10 Minutes to make photos and to save. ![]() Don't stop the progress Bar!

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #6 CastlesHere's my entry. Inspired by the ancient Japanese castles as seen here - http://www.teachenglishinasia.net/asiab ... se-castles
Modeling took every bit of 30 minutes. I hope using rubies is okay. Jim's "follow this" tool was invaluable for getting this done in time. I simply extruded and offset a pyramid of boxes, then drew out a quick profile which I copied to a corner of each box. I selected the bottom face and ran follow this. Then just clicked on each profile and BAM instant building. Windows are simple rectangles that I used JPP to push in all at once. I quickly made the other roof details by extruding a line on the Z and drawing a quick shape which I extruded into the building. I wish I could've done more on the very top roof, but I ran out of time. Render was done in Vue 6. Last edited by EarthMover on Wed Jan 07, 2009 3:24 am, edited 2 times in total.
