Speed Modelling Challenge #1 Sailing

Speed Modelling Challenge #1 Sailing

Postby remus » Wed Sep 03, 2008 9:59 am

Gonna try and keep it simple for this one guys.

-30 mins max modelling time
-unlimited prep time (thinking, sketching, browsing the internet etc. NO MODELLING!)
-I will ask people to judge the models on time taken to model, quality of the model and originality of the idea.
-Please try and keep your submission to one post in this topic, i.e. make a post and use it for all your prep work as well, just edit it each time you need to add stuff.
-Multiple entries are also allowed, keep it sensible though.

And lastly good luck in your nautical adventures!

Final deadline 2 weeks form now (17th september.)

EDIT: just to clarify the subject, there is a degree of freedom but please try and stay within the nautical realm.

Is it strictly SU output, or is post-processing/rendering software allowed?

The challenge is more about the modelling, but if you want to do a render/pp to accompany the model, go for it.

to clarify things: if I do an output (rendering), every work done within SketchUp - even the texturing and setup of renderproperties - has to be done within the 30 minutes timeframe. or in other words: after 30 minutes you have to close SketchUp!

at least that's how I understand it. :?

I think texturing and rendering has no time limit, only the modelling part, the mesh must be done in 30 minutes.

And isn't there anywhere a free timer ruby, and maybe we could post that ruby's output. Also that would help, people that don't have lots of time and have to model in sessions of a few minutes.

Marian is right, although it is the quality of the modelling that is being assesed, not the texturing.

With regards to the ruby, there is one (called timetrack) although it costs $5, so its not really a viable solution for the competition. Link: http://www.smustard.com/script/TimeTrack

In the hope of kick starting this a bit more, heres my entry.

The thought process went along the lines of: sailing-what to do after a hard days sailing-a sturdy beer to bolster you up-the bar

I wish id had more time! Id really have liked to add loads more detail to the corner bar building and some more sailing paraphernalia to the foreground. I think it would have made a big diffeence it id extended the sealine to a horizon of sorts, or maybe added some harbour type stuff, but of course i ran out of time.

Wow that's some serious color Juan....

I am still planning on submitting. And I agree about the rules you listed Remus. It is about the modeling only. so 30 minutes for modeling. All texturing and rendering can be done outside the 30 minutes, but they do not count in the "judging" (however we end up doing that.....?).

here's my entry. 30 minutes pass so quicly especially when you have to fix screwed up lines or have to mend the shape, the small things get to you, eating your time. All things considered it turned out...well

Actually i finished that in 28 minutes and didn't know what else to make on it in those 2 minutes.I wouldn't have had time make it if it weren't for all the new plugins, doing it the old fashion way would have taken me more than an hour.I can't say i'm proud of it even for a 28 minute job..maybe that now i have some experience making it fast i can make another one even better..or is that against the rules?

That would be a bit against your rules guys. You set it up that "no practising is allowed" and I think this would be one. But I don't want to interfere - it's your game :)

I'm just following with interest (I have made a couple of boats myself)

I see what your saying gai, i suppose i'll just have to hope marian decides to treat his new model as a seperate entry, and doesnt treat it as a refinement of the old model :)

Here's my entry. I had plans for a boat but with 30 minutes that was impossible [for me :D ]

Modeling: 30 min.
Render: 2 hours

I'm thinking of doing a set of Cleats and Blocks, Would it be alright to submit a collection of 2 models, as long as both were made within the time limit?

Well actually I do mind. This topic is about posting your own work, not taking someone else work adding some color and spamming this topic.

Jacob, that would be fine, as long as you submit them as separate entries to the topic.

Really cool model btw HFM, the render really brings it to life. Good use of your time as well.

Not going to be winning any prizes with this one. Had to redo the lattice work stuff a few times, so that slowed the whole thing down quite a bit.

p.s. i havent uploaded the model because its really big for some reason. I'll see whats wrong with it later and then upload it.
