Google puts Barrie on the map

Google puts Barrie on the map

Postby modelhead » Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:06 am

A big thanks to Google for putting our little town on the map. Barrie, Ontario, Canada has been confirmed by more than one source as the fastest growing city in North America but we have never had any useful images on Google Earth. In view of our growth rate I was hoping someone at Google would take an interest. Well someone did and today we got a great surprise when we opened up Google Earth.

Thanks Google Team!! I don't know why or how we have appeared all of a sudden but it opens up a lot of doors for us and as well Sketchup. Cheers to you!!!!

On the subject, does anyone know or if Google Earth has
a list of areas that will be getting the high res treatment?

I don't know that Mike but if they do, they are rather reluctant to reveal it.
My town has about 170,000 citizens and all you can see resembles more like a meadow ith flowers from the distance (some coloured, hazy spots in the green). It will also be the European Capital of Culture in 2010 and the interest about the town has already been rising already (also in GE).

I contacted them about a year ago and they said they could also use aerial photos in the format of "geo-tiff" files (some hi-res, non-compressed files with geolocation reference in them).

Now as I work for the township here and we are just about purchase the latest aerial photos, I'm "lobbying" to do so by extending our rights to give the files to Google for upload.

So lucky you, Bruce, congrats and happy surfing!

Since you can see us (Barrie, Ontario) now on Google Earth I am motivated to start building there. I put these two models up over the weekend. A model of the Barrie Public Library and the Barrie South Shore Centre.

Please have a look.
Cheers!

ps: Please rate the models for me.

Another building for Google Earth..Barrie City Hall..there should be a spot in the forum for photo matching...at least if there is I can't find it. This picture is straight out of SU.
