Insert large 3D topo area from GE?

Postby DonovanWeberDesign » Mon Mar 04, 2013 8:26 am

i am modeling a train proposed train station on a Hawaiian island. Is there a way to upload a 3D topo from GE into sketchup? With SketchUps geo-location tool I can only get a little square.

thanks.

One simple way:
Open the Google toolbar
Select the locale you want for your model and copy it into SU
You can bring in as much land as you need by bringing multiple areas and stitching them together.
I'm not sure what you mean by "a little square", but I've brought in single "squares" of hundreds of feet on a side. Just pick an altitude that gives you good resolution and do your best to bring in the adjacent squares from the same altitude.

yeah. This is what I was afraid of. I need quite a big patch of land so stitching all the little squares together will be time prohibitive.

Thanks anyway though!

Yes, though you can zoom out (to a certain extent) to grab bigger pieces, the more you zoom out, the less the image and 3D terrain definition will be so you really need to find an optimal distance - which also means this painful, manual stitching.

There is a plugin which can help you with trimming the overlapping terrain pieces (but will not completely save you from some manual fiddling):

Weird as I zoom in and out my window for grabbing terrain stays the same size relative to earth. As I zoom out, my square gets smaller.

Thanks though.

The square gets smaller as you zoom out because there is a maximum area that you can "grab". You can grab other area by repeating the process and moving the selection box left, right,up or down. The areas should overlap. You can use a tool of mine, Clip or Trim Terrain Mesh to eliminate the overlap.

Nothing is worthless, it can always be used as a bad example.
