Several Instances of one model on GE

Several Instances of one model on GE

Postby leedeetee » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:42 pm

Hiya,

Just wondering what the best course of action is ....

I have modelled a building that forms part of the University halls of residence, there are many of the buildings that are exactly the same, so I am just wondering, if I should upload each building seperately for each particular residential block, or, should I cluster the buildings together (approx 6 in total) and upload that to 3dw/GE?

Thanks!

The reviewers from the Sketchup team prefer "one building = one model". That has several reasons:
- Google Earth users only have to download the single building that is actually visible in the viewing frame.
- it is easier for 3d-wh, to check for overlapping buildings or to replace single buildings by better versions then if many buildings stick together as one big file
- Uploading a cluster of buildings in one model (or the whole uni) would mean a bigger filesize (limit max 10MB).

So you see, it is good to wonder about ;)

Many thanks for your reply!

So then, effectively, I am going to have 6 models exactly the same in my 3dw?!

Hi Lee,

With the latest SU 7.1, if you make components of your buildings inside the same model, you can just right click and upload a component. So practically you can still have them all (correctly positioned) in the same file but upload them individually.

Hi,

Didn't realise this! Thanks! Just had a quick test and it's easy as pie!

Cheers!

There is one more big advantage of uploading them one-by-one; you can add individual info to each building. Now I realise that a row of boring dorms of the same kind on a univ campus might not deserve long pages of info but imagine a town with blocks of attached buildings. You can model the whole block together - thus making sure the buildings touching each other are perfectly aligned - but still be able to very quickly upload the individual ones with all the relevant info.

It's not only the 3D model itself that is valuable in the WH / on GE but all the stuff you add so that people wandering about can learn all the interesting/valuable things.

Yes, I totally see what you're saying Gaeius, makes perfect sense. I was just a bit worried by having 5 or 6 of exactly the same (and they are EXACTLY the same!) buildings in my 3dwarehouse but id that is the way to go, then that's fine by me!

Thanks again for the input!

Just thought I'd re-visit this topic with another question ...

If I have a block of say, 10+ buildings which are all next to each other, and would be uploaded onto GE/3dw seperately, immediately after one another, would it be acceptable to leave the sides of the buildings untextured, as these afterall, are hidden?

It would really make sense to me but when models are reviewed, they are not necessarily inspected loaded next to each other.
Why not use a "generic" colour that is similar to the façade? If you colour some face, the Google folks may still not like it so when a colour is applied on a face, divide that face, right click on one half and "make unique". Now SU will create a raster image from the colour. Next step is to select both halves and "combine textures" (and delete dividing edge).

Now you have a nicely coloured "side" and can avoid debates with the SU Team.

Very nice tip, Gai, thank you. Still need to buy you that beer! :thumb:
