We had those hand lathes in school for woodworking. Lorch was the brand. Much smaller than that one but same principle. They were replaced with the electric Harbor brand which just spent more time getting repaired than in use.

The teacher also had a land lathe stored in a box under his desk. It was a real vintage piece that you got some 1 on 1 tutoring on. Thing was tiny but ran like a dream

Haven't seen those things in years and now I want one.

Until a few years ago, there was a wonderful old turning shop in Philadelphia, the John Grass Co. Three floors of machinery, including a number of turning stations, all powered by one 5-hp motor in the basement. The motor replaced a steam engine sometime in the 20th century. I got a chance to visit the place when I worked at Fine Woodworking and shot some video. Here's a link:

There's a fellow in south central New York State who runs a steam powered machine shop. He's been an inspiration.
