3Dconnexion SpaceMouse (advice sought)

Postby L i am » Mon Nov 28, 2022 12:41 pm

Hi I have a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse which I bought some years back. From memory I think I tried to use it for only a few weeks and cant remember why I stopped using it. Anyway I found it with a bunch of other computer gadgets and have bought a new cable for it and downloaded the latest drivers. It is up and working. I was suprised that after about 5 years I have retained some motor memory and can still operate it fairly well. I think the reason I stopped using it was I thought it was of little value to my sketchup work, cant be sure.
I am looking for opinions of others who use the 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse and do you find it of value above the normal mouse? and am asking because

I want to know it my time investment will pay off or not amd is it of value to you in the form of eficiency. Thought please.

There is no one correct response to your query.
The spacemouse is a rather personal thing. Some love them some hate them and some use them intermittently.
I personally feel like I have my hand cut off when it's not available, but then I have never been someone who has their hand on the keyboard constantly using shortcuts. Plus I use a stylus rather than a mouse, most of the time.
I know some of the very skilled modellers on this forum don't use them, have tried them and don't like them. Others use them all the time.
The reality is, it works for me, not for others and does it work for you and how well.

It will return on its investment if you are 8+hrs a day swinging around in 3D apps.

I was a frequent user of the Pro model but it broke. I have the smaller wired device but never took to it like I did the Pro. Since I stopped using I've not really felt lost without it.

One of the reason we developed Pie Menu was to reduce the travel time for mouse input...

...and to have a cleaner more intuitive SketchUp interaction.

Zoom to Selection and Zoom to Extents are my most used hotkeys after Save in SketchUp. I don't fly around models, I just pop out and in based on selections. So I'm a SpaceMouse user in recovery if that makes sense.

I use mine daily with SketchUp and Revit. It takes less effort than scrolling.

Thank you, I agree it flys straight through "Walls" without an issue unlike native SU I will use it just based upon that. I find scrolling through SU Su walls infuriating, and a source of RSI on the mouse wheel finger ;)
