Dimensions Box not working :-(

Postby PetterWB » Thu Jun 13, 2013 2:30 pm

After upgrading to 2013, entering dimensions in the Dimensions box does not seem to work!

:(

Anyone out there with the same experience (and a fix, please!) ??

What do you mean it isn't working? What happens when you try to draw a rectangle? Does the Measurements box show the dimensions of the rectangle. If you type a dimension, does it take numbers? Are you trying to click in the window before using it? Remember that isn't a clickable window.

I can edit the dimensions in the box, but when entering Return it does not do anything to the rectangle or line (as it did in the previous versions)

don't edit the dimensions in the box. its visual only. the moment you click anywhere, including that box, you end the command streak and you can't continue to change rectangle sizes, multiple copy, or divide by copy. (or any of the other things you can use the infinite repeat for...)

just type, and hit enter.

Petter,
I know it’s pretty late in the day to respond to your inquiry and by now I’m sure you’re up and running again. Even so maybe this’ll help you or someone else in the future. I’ve just begun using Sketchup, version 2014, and similar to you I’ve already had the same issue. Suddenly one day my measurements toolbar wouldn’t accept a keyboard input. Seemed to be locked and frozen. Searches in the knowledge base and‘net returned schooling on how-to-use-this-feature kind of replies. Useless. Might have made sense to other readers not experiencing the issue but to me, and I suspect with you, however, the well-meaning helpers missed the point. This problem seems to be very uncommon as evidenced by the dearth of information on it anywhere. One wag suggested the font, Verdana, might have been turned off on his computer. Helpful to that guy. Not me. I checked my font library and it, Verdana, was still alive. Another victim uninstalled/reinstalled the program. Didn’t work for him. Me either. Awhile back I was gifted with a brand spanking new fancy-smanshy bizillion bit Sony Vaio Windows 8 laptop but despite its Savant-like performance it is also accompanied with some maddening Tourettes-like tics . I suffered with this thing for a year with a Photoshop problem. Similar thing; a tool wouldn’t work. Sony and Adobe each pointed their fingers at one another. “It’s them”, they said. Then one day Photoshop began to play nice and it worked as it should. No clue as to what the fix was, only that the problem went away. Now I had this thing driving me nuts. While searching my machine for hours, and then days for a clue, I discovered an automatic update coincided with the same date that my measurement input problem started. Allowing a little time for consideration I finally decided to perform a system restore. I set the restart calendar to be the day before the update and wuddaya know? It’s working again! My Sketchup will again accept typed inputs in the measurement window. This is something that worked for me and is provided only as a suggestion. If you’re stuck this might work for you too.

SEMI COLON Worked! (or maybe other punctuations.. user need to observe the value control box display)

Resurrecting a 5 year old thread.. just in case somebody like me Googled for answer. Here's my weird experience with Sketchup 2018 pro- Normally when creating a rectangle or square, I would type in the values separated by a COMMA (,) in value control box to specify my measurement. Example: For a 100x300 rectangle shape, you will type in 100,300.

However, this comma doesn't work in my other workstation, and took me a year to figure out! (I accidentally observed the value control box while doing a rectangle and the preview values display semi colon instead of the normal comma). So I figured out that the Sketchup in this particular PC only accepts SEMI COLON (;) as separator, no wonder the comma won't work. Example: For a 100x300 rectangle shape, you will type in 100;300. Weird isn't it? I'm using same Sketchup 2018 pro.

I suggest, play around with the rectangle tool, and the first time you hit mouse button (starting point of rectangle)- values will be displayed automatically corresponding to your mouse movements, and notice the values separator, it may be comma, semi colon or something else. I hope this helps.

Check the regional settings of your computer. It isn't sketchup that chooses what to use it is how the OS is using comma and semicolon.

In reference to my experience above, all PC have same region and keyboard/language input (US layout). Only difference is OS.

PC 1- Win 7 Pro - Sketchup 2018 Pro - comma works
PC 2- Win 8 - Sketchup 2018 Pro - Semi colon works
PC 3- Win 10 - Sketchup 2018 Pro - comma works

For now, I will regard this as a Sketchup bug.

Look at the decimal symbol on PC 2 and compare it to the others.
