Will 2019 see a better Layout?

Postby mtno » Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:28 am

Hey who's noticed the recent post from John Bacus on the SketchUp blog?

"Today, Dimension 2.0 is being released, and the team has been super busy! Interoperability between Dimension and the rest of Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop and Illustrator in particular) has been greatly improved. And one more thing…
Adobe Dimension now natively reads SketchUp models. All of them, with 100% fidelity."

So one more 2019 question is : will Trimble reveal a long awaited, improved Layout this year or are we headed for debt with Adobe Creative Cloud?
.. Thoughts anyone?

That is probably great for Adobe slaves, I'm not one of them.

I sincerely hope the resources over the last who know how long was not mostly spent on this (or other unwanted) features.

SketchUp and LayOut can do with, amongst other things, a hefty kick under the arse speed increase.

Only time will tell.

As for Adobe Dimension, I saw a few examples while at 3D Basecamp that were pretty cool. I don't see that on its own as a replacement for LayOut but I can imagine some interesting options for documentation in LayOut. We'll see what happens.

Layout really needs to become snappier. Workflow then will be perfect, no other programs needed then. For me it is still a mystery how Nick Sonders can work with it that way.

An improved LayOut is THE thing required to SU to the next level, without it the software is hamstrung. I'd be happy if they've spent 99% of the last year sorting it layout out and used the 1% to add hatch patterns to section cuts in SU...........btw, shouldn't SU 2019 already be out by now?

apparently not, thanksgiving seems to be celebrated universally, I suppose they don't need the trust and goodwill of the end-users (not discounting their $$$), but hey, it's only been a year and a week (IIRC) since 2018 was released, so I guess some grace would be in order.

What are we looking for? For me the main thing is output. I need consistently named pdf files by page... I found a way to automate some with Mac (printing pdf) but 1) the print process is so slow 2) the pdf's created are very large (MB). Each issue is important for production and publishing. If I were to do all my documents through LayOut at present it would be a challenge with the speed of output. On the other hand, most of the time working in LO the speed is OK. That is probably because I keep it simple to avoid more of a bottle-neck at output.

Hhmmm .. hopefully very soon we will know if Trimble can deliver a worthy upgrade to SU-Pro. Some of us (maybe the 57% in juju's survey) have been annually supporting the development of SU-Pro for many, many years because IT IS THE BEST tool to do what it does and we keep loving & hating it! This time, my subscription fee will be redirected if we don't get any answers ..

Some of us (ce moi) renewed maintenance without knowing what's coming, maintenance expiry is a thing.

I still have faith, but I'm not sure if my expectations are too high as (generally) it feels I'm tested year on year. If it weren't for the many excellent extensions...

Hi there! I did renew maintainance blindly too... And I am admitedly worried about the delay. My desktop is kind of old (well, it's old... welp, it's very old), but I had a brand new laptop I got on Saturday that makes LayOut a beauty to work with.

Also, I hope the YouTube channel releases Sonder's content as soon as possible, as he said in a podcast that he was showing the new and improved workflow he uses. I consider Mr. Sonder the God's child of LayOut, more than SketchUp: he surely is one capable modeller, but how he makes LayOut spin makes my mouth watering!

I also use "conventional" 2D cad extensively, and I find LayOut really falling behind when it comes to dimensioning. The best example I can give you is that it doesn't allow to round off at, say, 5 cm (sorry, I'm Italian and I am really bad with the Imperial system). In my work, and I can't find any way to make it work automatically, the only way around it is editing every singular dimension.
Another major flaw is not being able to suppress unwanted extension lines in the dimensions, or to stretch them all at once, not before entering edit mode for them... It REALLY is time consuming.
Also, area (square meters/feet) comunication between SketchUp and LayOut can be vastly improved. Again, nothing that makes it unusable, but a lot that makes it somehow... Clumsy!

I find many differences between US and Italian ConDocs (many of them I try to include in my pojects/documents), and I can see how SketchUp is clearly better suited to the US Standards. Again: it is very (very) usable for me too, and I strongly advocate shifting towards it whenever I can, but it lacks a thing or two to make it really comparable to 2D CADs for small works (which is not bad: I find every tool to be exceptional in one job and not the best in others... But my first try is always SU).

Aside of that, I don't think SketchUp should be stretched further in modelling features (there's the awesome comunity we have for that, and In my works - which goes to full buildings to furniture design - I really need a need just a couple to make my day go smooth, even with topography and terrain surveys - Toposhaper by Fredo6 is astonishingly powerful). I'd go to a better and more capable BIM compatibily, and considering Trimble owns Tekla, I'd say it could be an option we'll see.
