[Plugin] Label Open Faces 1.0

[Plugin] Label Open Faces 1.0

Postby Chris Fullmer » Thu Mar 26, 2009 11:18 pm

Name: Label Open Faces

Description: This script adds a text label to every edge that borders only one face. For example, every edge in a cube will be bounded by 2 faces, therefore no edges will be labeled. A single flat face's edges will only bound 1 face, therefore all its edges will be labeled. This is hopefully useful for making solid models, or "watertight" models.
Usage: Activate the plugin at Plugins>Chris Fullmer Tools>Label Open Faces. If you have items selected, the script will only examine those items. If nothing is selected, it will search the entire model. Note that this script does not dig down into groups and components at this point.

Sorry, no video yet. But it is pretty straightforward. Its pretty much ripped off of Todd's label stray lines idea which has been one of my favorite scripts. I also have need of a script that labels open edges to help create watertight models. Here's a before and after shot.

Many thanks Chris, I think it will be an evolution that we move on from finding stray lines to finding open faces!

My script 'addfaces.rb' is related - it finds edges' missing faces and adds them... see link:

I think people who are making .stl files need to make their model watertight. So quickly finding all open faces might be useful for them. I had run into a problem with the drape command due to little faces not being created, so I wrote this script to find the little missing faces. So its useful for specialized purposes.

And chech out TIG's script, that goes above and beyond my little labeler, helping to automoate the mesh cleaning process. Very handy TIG, thanks for the link!
