iPhones are awesome, however my kid has new Lumion 900 which is slightly better IMO.

I have an iMac too, great as a media centre.

kris, apple will find a way into your life soon enough.

their TVs, thermostats, ...something.
business wise, they're good like that.. though I personally wish they wouldn't try to branch out so much.

Some of us are diehards... (I don't really mean to discuss anything, I'm just dying hard)...

After iFixit got a hold of the new MacBook Pro, they're not so stoked. After carefully breaking down the laptop piece by piece, they conclude:

MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15" Mid 2012 Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair).

Proprietary pentalobe screws prevent you from gaining access to anything inside.

As in the MacBook Air, the RAM is soldered to the logic board. Max out at 16GB now, or forever hold your peace—you can't upgrade.

The proprietary SSD isn't upgradeable either (yet), as it is similar but not identical to the one in the Air. It is a separate daughtercard, and we’re hopeful we can offer an upgrade in the near future.

The lithium-polymer battery is glued rather than screwed into the case, which increases the chances that it'll break during disassembly. The battery also covers the trackpad cable, which tremendously increases the chance that the user will shear the cable in the battery removal process.

The display assembly is completely fused, and there’s no glass protecting it. If anything ever fails inside the display, you will need to replace the entire extremely expensive assembly.

Two words, Apple: Not. Cool.

they're just bummed that they can't easily make money off of apple.

i mean, it's not as if the computers aren't fixable if something goes wrong.. it's just that they won't be able to sell the parts/labor.

Yeah, that helps explain their bias, but not mine (EDIT: or the particulars of their analysis). I'm no tech and I've gotten inside a lappie case a few times to do some easy jobs and didn't fail and I ain't bragging.

But this is the old proprietary with lock-outs, slavery/generic commodity, freedom rehash... Perhaps my mistake for biting, but I will try to keep players like that who have great success at making folks pay and keep paying, out of my life. Thermostats, security, home automation (for me, very limited)... -> Z-Wave.

for what it's worth, i wasn't giving my opinion there.. just my opinion on why ifixit wrote the review as they did.

personally, i think proprietary (anything) translates to "we are holding back technology/advancement for our own personal gains"

and apple is king at that because they somehow manage to get so many people thinking they are a cutting edge company..

(well, even then.. maybe they are a cutting edge company.. but that doesn't mean they're on the cutting edge in general)

ifixit went ahead and took the whole thing apart and changed their tune a bit..

ended up calling it an engineering marvel .

Well I guess that could be called playing both sides at once, as you report it. You may well be a marvel as we agree the product may be, and you may be not constructed in a way friendly to users wishing to be in control of what they pay very good money for.

Your link goes to a review of the display:
Today we took a closer look at the component that makes the new model MacBook Pro so groundbreaking: the Retina display. Apple claims that the Retina display in the MacBook Pro is the most stunning display to ever grace the lid of a notebook computer.

Honestly, we agree. The Retina display is an engineering marvel. Its LCD is essentially the entire display assembly. ...

But at what cost? The kind that’s green and has dead presidents on it. There’s no way to replace just the LCD, since the entire thing is the LCD; so, users with unfortunate accidents will have to replace the complete assembly. The intricacies of opening the display also mean that if anything else should fail inside, that same assembly will still have to be replaced, or the user will have to make do without the component.

But I've got no problems with the display or anything achieved except the lockouts and proprietary nature of the beast.
