Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)The theme for this challenge is "Modern Steampunk"
-----Modern objects with a Steampunk style.----- The recently modified rules are still fresh so please read them. Also for this challenge you will have 1 hour. The Official SketchUcation Community Forum Modeling Challenge Rules: For this challenge you will have 1 hour maximum for modeling and texturing. Your time spent is on the honor system, if you cheat you are only cheating yourself. You can use an unlimited amount of preparation time for thinking, sketching, researching, collecting textures or scratching your head but NOT FOR MODELING. Again, this is on the honor system. From now on only one (1) entry will be allowed so choose you subject wisely and make it count. If you post up more than one entry everyone will notice and you will be publicly ridiculed. For your submission please provide (1) a textured image as well as (2) a hidden line or xray/hidden line image so we can learn from your modeling techniques. The textured image will be used for the voting element of the challenge. Please also be considerate to members with slower connections and submit a maximum 1000 x 800 pixel image. Again, public ridicule will ensue if you violate this and your image will be removed. Your image is to be SketchUp output only please. Yes you can use the Styles with SketchUp; no you cannot post a rendering using Twilight, Thea, Vray etc… Finally, as enthusiastic as some of you are about rendering and sharing please do not post any renderings in the gallery or post models in the component forums as they could solicit votes. The community will vote for their favorite entry once the competition has ended and the winner will choose the next theme. Have Fun! Competition closes on September 17th at 2pm GMT
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Steampunk, who doesnt love steampunk.
Going to love entries on this one i guess. ^_^
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Had to google 'Steampunk', seriously cool though!
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Eric, I've got a quick question once again. Back in competition #34, I asked and you said it was fine to search the web for textures before the clock starts. Does this include adjusting the textures in Gimp, Photoshop, etc.? When the competition rules state that all texturing must be done within the competition time, this refers to applying, positioning, or wrapping the texture in SketchUp, am I correct?
Short version: Can I adjust textures in Gimp outside of the allocated hour of modelling time? --

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Oh yeah. Collect, stretch, manipulate your images all you want prior to starting SU.

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Nice one to start out the competition with modelhead!
I've got a model that I really want to take a shot at. I stink at the speed modeling competitions so I don't know if I'll get it done even with the hour time limit. I'm determined to get it done whether for the competition or not though. --

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Yep, done a bit of thinking. Methods and techniques and collecting textures. Just need to get to the modeling.

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Here is my entry. It is supposed to be an underwater squidoid robot thingy. I tried to get fresh machined brass shine. Most of the model is made of instances of just one component.
cheers Please, register (free) to access all the attachments on the forums.
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Usb stick. inspired out of steampunk pictures on google. Did not have enough time to make a cap
Hope it is worthy of a vote or two. Please, register (free) to access all the attachments on the forums.
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)great theme!
and the time limit is chosen correctly))) for 30 minutes can not do anything ... Although an hour is not all nice turns ... but not looking at it ... basis (I hope) I was able to pass ... sniper rifle, forest dwellers - FORESTER 5 days training, preparing and 1 hour "turbo" modeling Please, register (free) to access all the attachments on the forums.
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Hello,
I work on an idea for this challenge and I think that a gilded material as Oganocali would be good in my creation (.. effects of light ...) Someone can say to me how to make "gold" by using only Sketchup ? Thanks, Bear
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Perhaps by using a "gold" texture?
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)For giving the gilded look. I basically used the gimp's golden gradients as the texture. Around the cylinders I used triangular repeat pattern, with a linear gradient. For the rivets I used conical gradient. Of course you have to properly map those textures onto the objects. Starting from cylinder mapping is easy. All that remains is to bend the cylinders into the desired shape preserving the textures, there are many solutions to that. For rivets you can directly project the patterns I guess. I did practice on texturing beforehand.
cheers
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)
OK thanks, It's not easy. I try it later. Bear
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)
Well the answer is quite simple...because they are different. Joking aside, In Sketchup you cannot simulate the peculiarities of the materials as in a rendering program. So you have to apply textures that have already the peculiarities that you are searching for. Nice models btw.
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)BEAR17 - cool model, but I think it is mecha, not steampunk
I think (but I could be wrong)
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)
Thank you for the compliment For the gilded look : I think it's too ambitious for me because one hour is too fast and apply on this way the texture is long. I prefer spending time in the modeling and texturing at least (unless only one or two pieces of texture that way).
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)
Sniper - you're probably right. I confess to not being a specialist of the genre. I wanted more bolts, steel, wood and a little rust but due to time constraints, the model is flawed and probably too clean. And thank you for the compliment
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steam punk (1 hour* Removed from challenge as I wanted to finish it (too incomplete) and I don't like purple*
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Well I WAS planning on entering this one...
Great work Pete.
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Pete should only be allowed 30 minutes. 15 for the regular competitions. --

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Pete, it is very good moderl ))
i think im loose this competition again ((( compete with such models very hard
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)
I can't wait to see what you come up with after the competition. --

Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Hi there!
Making stuff in autocad to import them in sketchup, must be done in the time limit?
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)First, yes, it must be done in time limit (thus the "speed modelling" challenge).
Second, it must be done in SketchUp. No import from other software. Gai...
Re: Speed Modeling Challenge #44 - Modern Steampunk (1 hour)Well these entries so far have set the bar kinda low. Looks like another win for me. . . .
If I make it look easy. . .rest assured--it probably is.
