By doing this you are forcing users to create passwords which they cant easily remember which then results in dumb easy passwords, thus adding nothing to the intended security measures.
This is not pentagon or your bank, a simple forum such as this should not have these requirements.

You probably wont care and it doesnt seem like this forum has suffered from having these insane requirements(for such a simple thing, a forum) - and it doesnt matter, I signed up to download some files and this will probably be my last post..

I can, but half a year down the line where I might have the interest of SketchUping again I probably wont remember what password I used here because you required me to create a password that CONSTRAINTS the length of a password I can remember - in other words, you lost a user (but you wont give a shit because people who disagree should just piss off, right?)

Requiring(?) not only only a mix of letters and numbers but also upper and lower case characters leads people to creating passwords that are based of personal, often public or easily retrieved details - this is everything we want to avoid.

That is, if you havent purged my account for missing silly details like sketchup version numbers

Again, this is a forum for sketchup - not netbanking or CC sensitive websites.
If a users wants to have have the added security of mixing symbols then let that person be able to, but dont force it down throats because that results in dumbass passwords.

Next thing you should do in order to scare off people this forum is to have it only viewable IF you sign up, really great idea /s

Imagine that I sometimes forget passwords, too. And those who forget it here, can always ask - I don't know if you noticed but we even put a link to the front page in case someone forgets his password or there is any other problem. Look at my signature too if you want...

I seems to me that 'huleboeren' is an extremely unpleasant person.
If he were no longer a member I would not fret.
To kick off like this on his first posts shows regrettable anger-management issues
I too fail to see what is so scary, or off putting, about having a password requirement for a forum login - on ANY forum.
He'd be the first to complain if his account were compromised etc etc!
The SCF password length range and the asking for a mix of input characters is also almost universal!
How are we 'forcing' him to give way 'personal details' with this
Also many people are members of several forums etc and they will use fairly easy to remember passwords with common attributes.
What sort of password does this guy expect to 'create' that won't fit into such a logical 'set', and that he will be unable to remember a few weeks later.
Many newer browsers offer to remember your password for you... so months later when you go back on you have help anyway.

It's a pity Gai hasn't installed a 'twat-detector' to filter out prospective new members who are incapable of contributing to the forum...
But I suppose out of about 87,000 members we will inevitably get the occasional pillock like this !

Interestingly, people do not really have issues with their passwords (there is an automated recovery system for that) but their usernames. I have just had a look and I have had 100 emails for the last 6 weeks (more exactly the 100 list on the first page goes back to mid / late July) where people wanted/needed some help with registering, lost usernames etc.

Now the average email exchange with these members is usually 3-4 so that1s about 6-8 email a day (but sometimes I also have to register them manually).

Remember two things:
If you forget your pwd then the forum will send reminder if you know your user name.I use that often on vacation when on a new machine and cannot use the " remember" pwd option many browsers have. It is not that I forget may pwd but that I lose track of which one with which forum. Reminder option is better that guessing.

Use Last Pass or Save it via Firefox's (Chrome, IE, whatever) automatic password save. As said, it's only a forum so even if someone gets it off your computer, so what... Save the serious passwords for financial, work, email and personal information sites like insurance. I've got so many passwords for so many forums and important places that it truly is ridiculous, and the requirements are incredibly annoying (caps/lower case, letters and numbers, special characters). So. Save 'em except the important ones, and even then if those can be saved securely - go for it.

1Password works for both PC and Mac. That, coupled with Dropbox, and you can be anywhere and "remember" even the most arcane passwords.

Now that the OP has been sufficiently chastised, his question does raise something I've wondered for awhile now. Why do websites care how secure your password is?

And to the original point, I would like to see some uniformity on these requirements (Sketchucation seems to be in the ballpark, I'm mostly speaking in general of websites). I've finally learned that I should just use my funky password for everything. Before I had about 4 versions of my password depending on the requirements of the site. Now I just use the most secure because I found myself having to try out several passwords depending on the site. Still though I'll run into sites occasionally that want 3 numbers instead of 1 or 2, or a symbol or some extra crap in there. And one website I had issues with, whenever you reset and create a new password, you can't use a password that matches one of your last 5 passwords o.O. So my password went from (something like) Big1Pimp to Big11Pimp to Big111Pimp to Big1111Pimp to Big11111Pimp to Big111111Pimp ...Because every time I went there I'd forget my password because of their rules and eventually my account would get locked and I'd have to reset my password and add a "1" in there. LastPass has solved many of those issues, thank goodness.
