[Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2After ThomThom came out with his brilliant UV toolkit plugin, I immediately thought of using it for arches and came out with this little tutorial.
Now as UV Toolkit 2 ("experimental") is out, this opens new horizons in texturing bent faces like arches and such. Here is another little, step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve an arch-like shape with correct texture maps. I finally ended up with a half arch only (as my starting shape was not long enough for a nice, full arch) but then I did not want to restart the whole process. Texturing an Arch in SketchUp Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Nice one Gai. Thanks.(Thanks to ThomThom too obviously)
Followed carefully the tut, however I'm only able to get what you see in the picture. What I'm doing wrong? -apply the texture; -draw the mortar's lines; -hidden geometry on; -ctrl+eraser on the lines; -hidden geometry off; -select the surface with the texture with one click; -UVtoolkit-->remember position; -bend the pillar; -select the surface with the texture with one click; -UVtoolkit-->restore position. Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Hi Massimo,
Can you attach the skp file (preferably before the bend)? Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2HI Gai, here you have a model before the bend and before the UVtoolkit-->remember position.

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Hm. To me, it seems to work correctly. I am on SU 8 however - don't know if that makes a difference (should try on 7 as well).
The bend is a bit funny though as only the front face was subdivided (This should obviously not have any effect on the UV part) Please, register (free) to access all the attachments on the forums.

Reason: "Downgraded" file to version 7 - sorry Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2I tried in v.7 and it worked correctly, the same way.
Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Have tried also with all faces with subdivisions, but the result is pretty the same. Also the result seems a bit unpredictable: sometimes nothin happens after UVtoolkit-->restore position. Maybe SU 7 is the culprit. Thanks anyway.
Edit: Oh you're too fast! So it's not SU7.
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Here is the file saved after bending but before restoring the UV's. Try to restore from here so that we see where are the steps that went wrong.

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Wait...Found it. I'm used to press F4 before bending in order to have subdivisions. If you do that it doesn't work. Thanks for the help.
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2And it works also with multiple faces selected.

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2
In the release notes it says that once you add new geometry after remembering the UV, the data is lost. This is why we need to subdivide first and remember next. It would certainly be awesome if it somehow could remember UV's after modifying the mesh (by adding/removing faces). Maybe one day...
Yeah. I just select all (of the column) and run the plugin on the whole selection (including all sides). Did I mention that it's an excellent plugin? _______ Also, it does not only work on quad faces but on triangles, too. This is very important as some operation may add further subdivision by triangulating (imagine a twist for instance) Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2
Yeah, you did...
Indeed.
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Now twisted AND bent.
(This definitely needs pre-triangulation as it would be triangulated by the twist anyway) Incredible! ![]() Please, register (free) to access all the attachments on the forums. Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2So Gai now we are waiting for a model of this...

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Ah, Bernini... I have not always liked that deep Baroque but nowadays I am fine with it...

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Yeah, I always preferred Borromini (who also worked a bit at that baldaquin anyway).

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Sorry to be dumb but how do you subdivide? is it a plugin?
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2I just copied the bottom edges along with a linear array (Ctrl+
)Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2er if i do that it creates faces for each section of the texture, your 2nd image shows it as one face and your first shows dotted lines for the divide my has sild edges?
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Yes, I softened those edges so that when I turn off hidden geometry (which you can see in the first image as dotted), I can select the whole surface as one. If you select all after the array operation and right click > soften edges, check the "soften coplanar edges" box at the bottom right of the dialog.

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Ah I get it thanks
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2So how is it going? Let's see some interesting results (I always make boring vaults only although now there is also a sugar cane I made this way)

Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2hohum not working, done it all but when i click restore uv it does nothing at all
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2Have you got the original (not-yet-bent) shape?
Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2yea got it fine looks exactly as in your tut
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2You mean it looks like the one in the tut before you make the bend and the UV restore or you mean that you could do it finally?
Gai...
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2i can do the bend its just the uv restore that does not work
Re: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2
If you open the Ruby Console - does it give you an error? If not, any chance you can do a video capture`? Thomas Thomassen — SketchUp Monkey & Coding addict
