[Plugin] Extended Standard Views v1.1 - UPDATED

[Plugin] Extended Standard Views v1.1 - UPDATED

Postby Chris Fullmer » Mon May 18, 2009 10:17 pm

NOTE: Only works with SketchUp version 7
This is called Extended Standard Views. It has all the same views that SketchUp already has. But it works with user defined axes. Currently if you change the axis of your model, and then change to one of the standard views, it will not align to your set axis. This plugin fixes that and it aligns the camera to the user defined axis.

Note: SU does not print to scale on views other than its standard views. This plugin does not change that unfortunately. Perhaps in a later version using the section plane workaround.

This plugin adds a toolbar, so be prepared.... Sorry for the ugly icons. Its as if I tried to make them as ugly as possible....arg.

Hope this is helpful. I can do a video tutorial later when I get home.

Chris... since you are working with Views... what do you think about a plugin that would create the 4 windows view that so many other 3d programs use? You know... working all the time in 3d is nice, but sometimes, having the 4 views IS BETTER.

Hmmm dunno if that would be possible with Rubies... I wish the Sketchup team themselves would add the feature.

Yeah Aces, thats not possible with Ruby.

Also, a HUGE thing I forgot to mention is that I don't think this plugin will work with anything before version 7. I'm pretty sure that the trick I am using in this plugin is new to version 7. Version 6 might still align to the original axis. Sorry, nothing I can do about it. I'll test to confirm though,

Chris

EDIT: Confirmed, it doesn't work with version 4,5,6 or earlier. Just version 7. Sorry Pilou and any other SU6/5 devotees!

I'll have to think that through a little better. Plus I noticed that it is not compatible with organizer. so if someone tries to use organizer on this first version, the icons will not appear correctly. I'll fix that in the next maintenance release.

Wow, ok I just checked it out and it crashed SU quickly if your inside a group or component. So i've removed the plugin for now. If I can get it working, I'll post it again later.

UPDATE!

OK! I think I got it working inside of groups and components now. Sorry about that. hopefully I didn't make you lose too much work when it crashed!

So its a new updated version in the first post now. I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to do it, but if someone WANTED to make some nice icons, I wouldn't object! (seriously, its probably not that popular of a plugin though. So it might not be worth the effort).

Don't worry; I had no progress in a model. I always see what's going to make a plugin crash before I use it, just incase. That way, no unexpected surprises. ;) In fact, other than the group and component thing, your plugin seems to work fine; even while other plugins and tools are being used, or loading. :thumb:

... Also, how to you embed Jing videos in the forum????? I've been trying to forever!

Chris

I noticed the more I use the plugin, the slower the response is to the ISO view. This slow down even affects the Sketchup views.

Thanks for all your work on scripts.

@Ken - So is it a little slow down, or major? So far I am unable to reproduce anything. It might be caused by increasing geometry as you work, making the plugin work a little slower. But that shouldn't affect the regular views. If anyone else sees it, or has any thoughts, let me know!

@BTM - Good, glad I didn't break anything. As for videos, the videos i make are flash videos and I host them on my webserver. So I use the "Flash" button in the post creation page.

Code: Select all
[flash=800,600]http://www.myurl.com/my_vide.swf[/flash]

Thats what it looks like. If you are doing a youtube video, you have to dig through the "embed" code they give you to find the url, but otherwise it works exactly the same. Simon LeBon created a big thread with VERY detailed inscrutctions how to do it too. It was quite informative. Search for it, I don't remember if it was in the corner bar or the sketchup main forum, or possibly the tutorials forum.

Thanks everyone for testing/using these plugins. I know some of them are sort of specialized, but its great to have people download and use them. Thanks!

Yeah, really! If only this fixed SU's inabilty to easily print to scale from a non standard view.

a little question, would it be possible
to add "custom" points of views ?
something like self configure able points of view (Camera positions)?

hope it gets clear, what i mean..

thanks for the plugin Chris

its Views as they should be

just one question is it possible to make a button to toggle between perspective view and parallel projection? So you dont need to go throgh the menu all the time.
that would be so nice.

Thanks in advance!

You could assign a keyboard shortcut for that if you use it that often.

Chris

Will I downloaded Jing to record what was happening. However, the problem seems to have been an aberration. Right now I cannot get it to repeat.

It was a major slow down.It would take the ISO view over ten seconds to respond. I wasn’t modeling, just using a small model for testing. Maybe something else was going on. Will keep Jing in the standby mode.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Very cool, Chris... hey while you're at it, how about adding the 3 other ISO views - SW, NW, & NE?

I develop the large complex of plugins ArchTools.
But while not all is ready for a publication.
And I wrote a similar plugin also.
But while did not find how to avoid improper work of plugin in more early versions of Sketchup.
I publish my variant of script, because I think the best version of my script.
(Includes Iso Auto, Iso SW, Iso SE, Iso NE, Iso NW)
It is the cut out part from my complex of plugins.
Unfortunately without icons.

Thats much cleaner code for determining the axes and setting the cameras Alex. I don't if you'll get as many people seeing it burried here deep inside this thread. You should make its own [Plugin] thread for it so people can find it easier! Or maybe wait until you add icons I guess if you'd like? Either way, it might just get lost here.

Great plugin though :)

Chris, another great plug-in....!

I have often wondered for sometime if another view somewhere between Wireframe and Shaded could be developed..... Quite often i have wanted to export a view to Layout in black and white with only edges showing. the problem is I'd like it to appear as a line drawing only, no faces that covers other linework on the page.... something like wireframe but without the internal linework!!!

What do you think?

Great Plug in Chris!!!
which made me think of an idea i had a while back about another standard view somewhere between wireframe and shaded view.
From time to time i want to export a view to Layout in Black and white with only edges showing... the problem is with shaded view the faces interfere with linework. I also know that we can re-arrange line work visually by hierarchy but still the problem applies...
What I'd like to see is a wireframe mode without the internal linework. Say a wireframe, profiles only mode... it would work especially well with plans as ground surfaces would not display which helps with dimensioning, notation, etc in SU ...

What do you think?
