Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkSteampunk
To mark this 10th comp the time limit is being upped to 1 hour. Entried must be submitted by 6 PM GMT on 17 april. The rest of the rules are at the top of the forum. And a little inspiration to get you going. Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkAlways wondered what that kinda 'art' was called, I once almost bought an industrial looking metal fish (wife talked me down).
This would be an awesome subject for rendering too.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunkyes it is there is a similar contest going on over at cgtalk.com although theres is much much more than a speed challenge, but still inspiring.

It will be an interesting one to say the least.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkYou can thank Mr BTM fpr the good choice of topic
![]() oalexis, those cgtalk competitions are amazing. Im always amazed at what they can achieve. Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunkso if I understand this right it's kind of a Lo-tech . . .or hi-tech rendered as lo-tech. .. steam, winches, pulleys, etc.--kinda like the stuff you would see in the Wild Wild West (old TV show--I am dating myself!) is that it?
If I make it look easy. . .then it probably is.

Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkHi Guys,
Couldn't resist.......right hand started fidgeting!! The peel would have taken the modeling over an hour. The textures and style took approx 2 hours post modeling. Last edited by modelhead on Fri Apr 10, 2009 5:27 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkI love it. A steam powered Apple Corer Peeler Slicer. I wonder if it is made by Pampered Chef?
![]() Nice work. The competition is on!!!
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkThe Legs
The moment I finished modelling i noticed this wouldnt work. I suppose it might make a nice statue ![]() Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkYou've seen those ads with the guys that are pedaling the world. He looks like he just came off shift. Cool Remus.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkNice entries!
![]() I still haven't thought of what I'm going to make yet, probably some kind of steampunk robot. Also, when do I get the prestigious title of "that-guy-with-the-yellow-orange-display-name"? ![]()
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkWhen you win, of course
![]() Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunk
well you got it now. . . .Mine is back to dull ol' gray. I think that FORMER winners need some kind of name designation . . . plus life-time secret service detail. You know . . .benefits that befit the dignity of the office. If I make it look easy. . .then it probably is.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkMy first entry in a contest. I had to do it in two sessions of 30 min. Hope that is not a rule breaker. Love this theme, can we have two entries?
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunkoh what the hell, here's mine:
i know it could use rivets, and glass, and texture, and ..... ![]() Last edited by xrok1 on Thu Apr 09, 2009 3:16 am, edited 3 times in total.
“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.”
http://www.Twilightrender.com try it! Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunk
Not a rule breaker as far as I see it. Nice work. And yes, you can upload more than one.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkOk, I had a go. This is my Steampunk Lightsaber. It is not my design, that I "borrowed" and I had fully intended to wrap certain areas with copper piping but I ran out of time. I stopped around 58 min. This one was not as easy as I thought it would be
![]() Hope you like.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunk
so i started over and ended up making the same mistake only different.. this time i made it to 45 minutes before i realized i need 3 or more hours to draw what i want (1 of those hours would be spent rotating/moving etc -- too many polys). i wanted a big padded leather looking thing to finish off the frames and then a strap.. so now, i really do have an idea for something that can be done in under and hour.. i'm posting these anyway [if i don't get around to attempt #3, i'm at least hyped that i stumbled across a way to get this pseudo-clay look out of sketchup] dotdotdot
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkWicked lightsaber boo, crazy amount of detail for an hour! And cool spider xrok
![]() Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkThanks remus. The main body was just a profile Follow Me around a circle. It was all the little bells and whistles that took up my time. And I wasted almost 10 min. doing the grip the "wrong way" before I got it right (the way I wanted it to look).
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 SteampunkI went through the process in my head, and modeled as fast as I could; took pretty much the whole hour, textures added after time, but it's finnished
![]() ...I wish I could put the pictures together like in Boo's post, so I would have all the pictures on the voting page. Anyone know how to do it with GIMP?
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunkthat does it . . ..I think I will wait for the next one. That is just too cool
If I make it look easy. . .then it probably is.
Re: Speed Modelling Challenge #10 Steampunkanother set of glasses that i was able to sort of finish in under an hour.. i couldn't put in some of the details/gadget add-ons that i would of like but these should still be okay for driving/flying those machines around .. they should also work well for apple peeling and lightsabering
