Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariWe received an email from a SketchUp user who liked a rendering of a Rhino Model using Brazil better than the renderings he saw of SketchUp models.
Here is the rendering he sent as an example: We have often wondered if it is the Nurbs Geometry in Rhino which makes good renderings - or just the skill of the Rhino users. So we would like to see what some SketchUp users can do with a similar model using the various rendering packages available wit SketchUp. Lets use this model as a base: [This 3D Warehose model has been edited since the original post was made] Jaguar XKR-S Put something behind it or in the sky for reflection and see what you can do. Render it with your favorite rendering package, post the results here, and I will place them in the Sample Renderings section of SketchUpRendering.com. Besides seeing samples of various rendering packages, the purpose of this thread and/or the SketchUpRendering.com site, where we will post these images, is to show SketchUp users the value of using add-on rendering packages to improve the quality and value of SketchUp models and images for internal or client presentations. It is OK to change materials, backgrounds, lights, and other rendering settings – but do not add or change other geometry to the car – unless there is something wrong with the original model. Also, check out these similar Sample Rendering Threads if you like. Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariThey are 100% correct, there is no way on this earth that the SU model you linked can ever compete with the Rhino version as it's crap in comparison.
Take a look at image of said model, see the segmented modeling and lack of detail like in light assembly? I do not care how good you can render, if the model is crap so will the render be. Now if you can get hold of the "nurbs" model for us to render then I believe using Thea4SU I can compete, a great render begins with a great model, putting lipstick on a pig is still a pig with lipstick.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
I don't have any lipstick, but it's still a pretty pig. Last edited by Box on Fri Nov 29, 2013 7:56 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariI'll see if I can get the Rhino model exported to SKP and we'll see if it has better detail and/or someone can suggest a better model on the 3D warehouse.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
What about this Jaguar XKR-S sure looks pretty detailed to me... ![]() Here's a quick render... (IBL isn't any good, but was what I had available...) Cheers

Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariAgain it goes down to the modeling app you use, Sketchup hates poly's, so a great model will most likely buckle SU as it will be heavy, see the one I have, it's modeled with 3DsMax and when converted to SU comes in around 30MB and tons of poly's.
This will be comparable but at what cost? so sometimes Rhino, Modo, Blender, 3dsmax are the better tools.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrarithe ferrari model of the initial post is indeed not a good one...there are a ton of converted 3ds car models inside the warehouse which are more suitable for a comparison like this. not that i'm saying that sketchup cars can't look good...take a look at eliseis' work for example.
nevertheless, here's a rendering from me made with Thea from a Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series 3dwarehouse model. Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariLets try to agree on a model. It doesn't matter that it was originally created in SketchUp, but rather that it can be represented with SketchUp geometry and can be rendered well with one of the SketchUp add-on rendering packages.
I we can get one more vote for the Jaguar XKR-S below, lets use that.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariWhy not use the one Frederick suggests?
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Jaguar XKR-SThat's the one I wanted one more vote for.
Lets use it. Jaguar XKR-S I am changing the name of this thread, and the link in the first post, etc.

Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrariin the streets of Paris... rendered with Thea unbiased TR 1 (rendertime 25 minutes), slightly adjustet contrast and brightness in photoshop.
who else thinks this car looks like a frog who just told a joke and waits for reactions? ![]() Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariRendered with "Renditioner v3"
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariJust had to give it a go.
I used Thea4SU, rendered with Presto GPU MC, CRF Nikon D7000 only HDRI lighting on a shadow catcher. Render time 3 minutes GTX 660ti.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariThanks for the quick responses to this. I have placed the rendered images onto the SketchUp Rendering site.
I will add more as we get them. Let me know if you want to change your comment or credits.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariNice staging Solo...

That looks completely real! Well done ![]() oli
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrariwow, there are some reeeeeally perfect renders out here!
here is my try... still learning my way through VRay... ![]() VRay for Sketchup, 9 minutes on my prehistoric Core2Duo machine only color correction on PS Last edited by xonpt on Sat Nov 30, 2013 9:34 pm, edited 2 times in total.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariI'm not very familiar with it... But here is an attempt with Revizto's new built in render engine.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
Thanks mate! ![]() Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariOne with a more simple environment, rendered with Indigo Renderer...
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariHope I'm not too late.
Xonpt that colour looks great. John
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
Nice overall scene - nice reflection on the car What renderer did you use? Any other comments to add to the image?
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
sorry for the noob question, but im trying to learn VRay (slow process for someone used to Artlantis, lol) how do i get softer shadows? i used a "shadow catcher" material for the ground, and the standard sun light.. and i tryed to play arround with the 'size' and 'subdivs' of the sun light (in the environment tab), but i couldnt get softer shadows... i suppose it can be done with dome light or HDRI, but i havnt got to that part yet, lol is it possible with the standard sunlight? Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariHello xonpt, Open V-ray output settings, open environment, open the Material Box and under Sunlight you can alter the sun size, bigger the sun the softer the shadows. Hope you can understand this.

Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariOne of the problems I have noted when using wharehouse models is the use of textures. Some folk rename the standard textures which is fine when you only have one mode/aspect using that mat but a thorough pain when that mat is commonly used elswhere in the scene/set. Other folk will use the same mat for different parts of the same model, the jag here does both of these things. Note the glass is the same mat as the tyres which is a nightmare if your render program treats all instances the same. I doubt roadholding will be great with glass tyres. I will post a renditioner render when I am happy with it.
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - Ferrari
thank you for the answer, but i actually did just that... and i changed the size from 1.0 to 3.0 and even 12.0, and i always got hard shadows... maybe i've got to give it an even higher value, i will give it a try ![]() ![]() p.s. - Mike Amos, i totally agree with you, and that's why sometimes one has to spend more time "cleaning" the model than actually rendering it.. but that's part of the "job".. Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariHello xonpt, open a fresh SU and draw a simple base and floor....
Sun sizes 01, 10 and 20, can't understand what your doing differently. For checking materials from a Wharehouse model try drawing a cube and paint a face with a bright colour then using Thom Thom's Replace Materials viewtopic.php?t=26013 Your able to swap a material and see whats messed up, replace or hit back button. John
Re: Sample Model for Rendering - FerrariOops - this thread has been hijacked.
Would you guys mind continuing the discussion of how to use VRay in a new thread?
