Can't create horizonatal guides

Postby geoffs » Fri Oct 26, 2018 1:41 pm

I'm running Sketchup Pro 2016 under Windows 7.

I can't create horizontal guides but I can create vertical guides (see attached)
I've checked everywhere I can think of to enable guides, the fact that the vertical ones show up would seem to indicate that guides are not turned off somewhere.

It did work fine but I haven't used Sketchup or the computer for some months if that's relevant.

I've searched for similar problems and none of the answers given have any effect. I do have a few extensions installed but I've tried with them disabled and the problem is still present.

Geoff

I see all sorts of horizontal guidelines in your file and four guide points positioned vertically above the corners of the rectangle.

As DaveR says.
Works fine for me making new guides in all directions.

To make a vertical guide-line you can click on the drawn rectangle corner and the guide-point***, alternatively set Axes to visible in View and drag from the blue-axis to make the vertical guide-line.
***Remember you can toggle between line/point creation using a modifier key ??

If that doesn't work for you you might have a graphics-card issue - try to update its driver...
See if that helps...

Or perhaps you have not installed SketchUp properly, try Repairing it thus...

While logged in as your normal user-account, close SketchUp if it's open.
Find the SketchUp installer's exe file - in Downloads ?
Select its icon, right-click > context-menu > "Run as administrator"...
When prompted choose "Repair"
This will not adversely affect an custom settings or plugins etc.
After it completes restart SketchUp and see if that helps.

Installing SketchUp in any other way [e.g. by double-clicking the installer's icon to 'Run' it], then that can cause all kinds of unexpected and weird things to happen later.
These usually relate to file permissions, opening plugins, and [mis]remembering user settings etc.
I not known it to mess up guide creation... but you never know !

Some further details on my system.
I'm running Sketchup Pro 2016 16.0.19911 32 bit on Windows 7 under VMplayer under Linux (Ubuntu 16.04)
VMplayer is a recent replacement for VMware Wprkstation.

Most of the lines running left to right in your screen shot are guidelines and they are running horizontally.

If you were to turn on the Axes in your model, they would give you a frame of reference. If you need more reference than that, edit the style and turn on the sky or select a style with Sky turned on already.

I can see those vertical guides but not the (many) horizontal ones. This would indicate that it's not a graphics driver/card issue - I assume I wouldn't see any dotted lines.
I guess I was hoping that someone would say 'You dummy, you need to select option X!'

I just had a closer (actually first) look at the screen shot I provided and noticed the horizontal lines do appear. Doh!

I have windows 8 under VMware for Fusion 360 so I might try installing Sketchup on that to see if it makes a difference.

I think it is due to your graphics arrangement. You are using SketchUp with an unsupported operating system and graphics setup, after all.

Dave R,
You're right! I went through the graphics settings in VMplayer and I had an option set that is normally used for DirectX9 (accelerate 3D graphics). One I turned that option off, my guides appeared.
I wouldn't have thought to change graphics settings as I could see some (vertical) guides, thanks for the suggeestions.

While not perhaps a supported option, I've found Skectchup at various levels to work very well under VMware. Mind you, I'm not exactly a power user!

A tip....
Change the color of your guidelines to something not normally used in SU, like a medium orange. Not green, blue nor red. Yellow is hard to see as well.
Being black and dashed they tend to hide.
It would be nice if the guidelines could be 2 pixels wide, but, that ain't gonna happen.
