Hey guys and gals. It's me again with another super important question (to me anyway :D ).
is there a way to "flatten" things in sketchup like you can in autocad?

Yes.
There are a few 'flatten' scripts - e.g. at Smustard.com [ http://www.smustard.com/script/Flatten ] and in the SCF Plugins forum - I have flatten-to-plane using a workplane as a reference surface; I think thomthom also has a tool within one of his toolsets - do some searching in the forum... there are several pages...
