Speed Modeling Challenge #52 - Building Freestyle (PRIZE)

Postby boofredlay » Mon May 14, 2012 1:07 pm

Hussel Hann, our winner of the "Computer Video Games" Challenge suggested Building freestyle (can be real or fantasy) and requested a 1 hour time for this challenge. Sounds like fun... get building!

The Official SketchUcation Community Forum Modeling Challenge Rules:

  • For this challenge you will have 60 min. maximum for modeling and adding textures.
Your time spent is on the honor system, if you cheat you are only cheating yourself.
  • You can use an unlimited amount of preparation time for thinking, sketching, researching, collecting textures or scratching your head but NOT FOR MODELING. Again, this is on the honor system.
  • Only one (1) entry will be allowed so choose you subject wisely and make it count.
If you post up more than one entry it will be removed.
  • For your submission please provide:
    1. A textured image.
    2. A hidden line or xray/hidden line image.
  • Your image is to be SketchUp output only.
    • Yes you can use the SketchUp Styles.
    • No you cannot post a rendering using Twilight, Thea, Vray etc…
  • A maximum 1000w x 800h pixel image is allowed.
If you post any larger your image will be removed.
  • Finally, as enthusiastic as some of you are about rendering and sharing please do not post any renderings in the gallery or post models in the component forums until the competition is over as they could solicit votes.

The textured image will be used for the voting element of the challenge unless the wireframe or xray
view shows the model in better detail in which case both images will be used for all entries.
The community will vote for their favorite entry once the competition has ended and the winner will
choose the next theme.

Have Fun!

Here is my entry... A Rubik's cube apartment complex. I must admit I did not think through interior design. With some caution it could even be animated.

It's sad indeed that so few entries have been submitted for this quite interesting subject. I know it would be against the rules (and in fact against the "interests" of those who submitted in time) but do you think, guys, it would be worth to extend the deadline?

Certainly I would only consider this if both Ogan and Anthony (and of course, Hussel) agreed...

Nice, mal. Check the posting requirements at the thread beginning. May be that a several different views are needed. I think a few more would show your entry better, anyway.

Anthony, sorry you withdrew. Come back.

This challenge reminds me of a 6 grade art project.

The teacher had a table of miscellaneous everyday objects (seashells, detergent bottles, rocks, tools, a book, .. etc.) All of the objects were weirdly shaped.

We had to pick an object. Then imagine it (or it's shape,) scaled up to house size; and design a house out of it. (Sort of of like the ol' children's story of the old lady who lived in a shoe.)

I chose a seashell, I think. A drew both a floor plan and an elevation. (And I was, like 12 years old?)

I'd already dabbled in drafting, as my Aunt was a long-time drafting department assistant for a major US automobile parts manufacturer, and she had brought me into work several times on "visit days." So I knew before I had even entered junior high, that I would be taking drafting. Anyway, I freaked out the teacher.

That wasn't the first time. When I was in 2nd grade, we had a free-style draw time. All the other kids were drawing stick figure people with crooked houses, etc. I drew a perspective (sort of cartoon-like,) airplane, complete with skin panels whose edges were lined with rivets. Freaked the teacher (who was a maternal Aunt, btw,) and she had to show it to all the other teachers in the school. they couldn't believe it was drawn by a 7 year-old.
What she did not know was the backstory. A year earlier, just after my Dad had completed his pilot training, he and buddy rented a Piper Cherokee. I went along for the ride. My Dad as holding me up, next to plane, waiting to hand me to his buddy, who was standing on the wing. While the guy was getting the plane opened up, I noticed all these little "bumps" on the side of the plane, and asked what they were. My Dad told me (he is an engineer,) that they were rivets and they held the airplanes skin together.
So it was only a matter of being observant and having a good memory.

Anyway.. enuff ramblin'

OK, I added some extra time to the challenge to get some more entries. Also, as well as the Purple Badge of Shame, the winner will receive a gift link to Humble Bundle....

https://www.humblebundle.com/

So, there's no real excuse now not to enter....depending on the number of entries I'll also include other prizes but I need at least 10 entries before this can happen. Get modeling.... :thumb:

i was trying to think of an unorthodox cabin or something along those lines. i have no idea how to make organic shapes in sketchup, but i would have liked to make some heavy white fabric sails for either side of the cabin to enclose it. this took me about 40 minutes, and i know it's just squares but i'm not that quick with the program

Interesting, perhaps unsafe and unsound, maybe unresolved, but interesting and I like. Some means of visible support would calm the nerves of the timid.

I gotta admit that's pretty cool, Anthony.

Must somehow justify the thick wrapper.... perhaps as an INGBUL™ (Integrated Greenhouse Building Lung)™.

Reminds me of my new cree flashlight.

Can you melt it after the contest is over?

This is my submission. I realized how quickly time flies when you do this. This was supposed to be a medical building. I had so many ideas but as I started working on them they all took longer than I thought they would. This was soo much fun, I wish I could do it again sometime. This submission is sad but I wanted to submit something. My studio old professor would have been disappointed if I did not. Not very "freeform". Don't yawn too loud guys. Sigh, maybe next time. Good job Cj_sniper.
