Starry sky background

Postby firkins » Tue Nov 06, 2007 10:35 pm

I am looking for a sharp image of a starry sky for a background for a night rendering. Everything I've seen is either too blurry or the stars appear too large.

Any info or pointers to a source would be appreciated.

Thanx.

Thanks James, I'll check those links.

I did do a google image search, but came up with mostly astronomy-geared images which were not suitable. None of the night background images that I have are hi-res enough to show stars realistically, they are too blurry and look like a smudge more than a point source star.

One thing I am pleased with is my moon component and how it rendered. I am rendering a SU site (large 100MB) in Kerkythia. I will post my moon component later.

I'll be posting my finished image in the gallery section hopefully later today.

Thanks again,

Michael,

If you do a Google Image search using the keywords "star wallpaper" or "star field wallpaper" I think you may find some images you can use. Artists' drawings or computer simulations of star fields tend to look much better and more dramatic than the real thing.

I have an application called Slyglobe for Windows. It's an astronomy app, with many options for time, date and location of observer, etc. It can display object names, constellation lines, etc.
The starts are sharp points, so you may find this handy.
For your purpose, you would probably turn off all indicators to get a clean sky field.
(Hint: click on the top right icon at edge of screen)
I use FastStone capture to grab screenshots- never seen anything easier, and it's free, as is Skyglobe.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thanks, everyone. Some great ideas. My image is coming along nicely, but still without stars!

These suggestions should help.
