Speed Modeling Challenge #37 - Compass

Speed Modeling Challenge #37 - Compass

Postby Rich O Brien » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:27 am

It can either be a Compass of navigation or a Compass for technical drawing. Should be some interesting takes on this!!

The rules:

- 30 minutes maximum modeling time

- Unlimited preparation time for thinking, sketching, researching but NOT FOR MODELING

- Community will vote for favorite submission at competition end

- Multiple entries are allowed

- Please provide a Wireframe, an Untextured and a Textured image of your model (800x600)

- SketchUp output only

- Please be considerate to members with slower connections when submitting images (800x600)

- Any texturing should be done within the 30 minutes

- As enthusiastic as some of you are about rendering, kindly refrain from posting any renderings in the gallery as they could solicit votes, remember this is about modeling, not rendering

- Have fun!

Competition closes on March 14 2011 - 6:00 PM GMT

Here is my take on this one. Navigational electronic compass for robots and computers, from Honeywell :ugeek: . I drew it twice the real size in relation to the datasheet to show details.

Inspired by an image I saw via Myst Online. I like the way it incorporates both types of compass, although I may be risking the wrath of the Freemasons.

Beam Compass.
I remember making one of these as an apprentice, out of a broom handle, a nail, a pen and lots of sticky tape. It was infinitely adjustable, until you ran out of tape.

Archimedes Trammel, used for drawing ellipses.
This one has a glass cutter head rather than a pencil.
