1) Drawing shapes 'without' a surface: Although TOS is designed to draw geometry over curved surfaces, it has the capability to also draw without, with 2 situations where there is no surface:
1) Draw perpendicular to edges
2) select the default plane when shapes are drawn in the 'empty' space.

This small video illustrates the feature:

2) FreeHand with and without Surface: TOS includes a Freehand tool allowing to capture contours on a surface (ans also without a surface). Typically, it can be used to draw a contour from a photo or texture which is applied to a surface.
FreeHandOnSurface provides 2 features that can be freely combined during a capture:
1) Disabling or enabling Sketchup inferences when drawing
2) Point & Click for each point captured or Click & Move to capture points with a configurable sampling in pixel.

This small video illustrates the feature:

Really like the feature of being able to draw shapes perpendicular to edges.
