Scan 3D with a Mobile Phone for SketchUp?

Postby pav180 » Mon Feb 21, 2011 1:56 pm

I've just started to scan a real world objects in 3D with my iPhone camera at http://www.my3dscanner.com. It is a nice free service, but it works fine only with texturized objects. And it is not fast.
There is an interesting article how to integrate a scan (point cloud) into SketchUp here:
http://www.my3dscanner.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=83
I am new in SketchUp and I am wondering if there is any use of point clouds in SU. I have my doubts.

There are tools to take a cloud of existing cpoints in your SKP and convert them into a surface - try my latest one based on Didier's earlier version viewtopic.php?p=301274#p301274
If the 'points' are specified in a file [say an x/y/z per line] there are several other tools to import these and make surfaces - depending on the file-format etc...

TIG,

Your POINTS CLOUD TRIANGULATION package is GREAT, thank you for advice! I have just checked it recently and it is probably the only solution that works well for cpoints triangulation.

I do not understand though how cloud_71 relates to your solution (or probably it doesn't relate at all). I tried it while importing .ply into SU and it was not great unless a point cloud is planar. But it works sometimes ;).

I am sure for you it is not a big deal to shovel any point cloud of any format into SU, but for me it was hard! This is why I referenced this link. It is easy if the original point cloud is in xyz type format, but I get the scanned point cloud from my3dscanner.com as Standford .ply. with RGB color, etc.

Anyway, thank you a lot!

You mentioned there are better solutions to import point clouds in SU. I am interested in importing .ply point clouds into SU. Can you please mention few?

In exchange I do not ask you even more stupid questions of how to import COLOR point clouds - I've read those threads:)

Just FYI there is a review of point cloud import and meshing in SU here:

http://www.my3dscanner.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=83

And TIG's Triangulation package is the best!
