Section Face in one component only?

Postby 3dDetailer » Tue May 22, 2012 7:33 pm

Hi. I;m working on a file that has lots of components/groups, that are spread out on the ground plane. I want to section ONE of these components, and create a section FACE, of that particular component only. Any one know if it's possible or if/how you manipulate the size of the section PLANE? The problem I'm trying to avoid, is making a Section Face of the entire model, as it creats a face in every component/group. Thanks

If you can't make that one instance unique and then add the section-cut within the component itself [thereby affecting only that one instance]...
Then you must consider making a group containing the one instance of the component in question.
If necessary group the instance + a line and then erase the unwanted line inside the group edit.
Inside the group edit add a section-cut.
The section only cuts the instance inside the group.

TIG here supposes that you know that if you enter the editing context of a group/component and add the section cut there (with the additional section cut face), it will only cut that context, not the entire model.

At least from your post it was not clear to me whether you are aware of this...

Gai is right - assumption is the mother of all **** ups !
To phrase it another way:-

A section-plane only cuts objects that are in the same 'context' as itself.
When it's placed in the 'model' it cuts everything in the 'model'.
When it's placed inside a group or component it cuts everything inside that group or component, but everything outside of that 'context' is unaffected.
This way you can put section-planes nested inside different contexts, so then they cut limited parts, instead of cutting 'everything' as you would get if you were to put the section-plane directly into the model context itself...

Hi guys. Sorry it took so long to get back here. Maybe I'm missing something, but I never get any "notification" emails that tell me someone has replied to my thread.

Ok, just tried a section of a "component", while in edit mode. Works perfect. DOH!! Now I remember. I accidentally did this a while back, and couldn't figure out why I couldn't see the section while the whole model was in view. Now I understand..Thanks guys.

Hm. That's weird. Are they not trashed by your email system? Make sure to add @sketchucation.com to your trusted domains or whatever they are called (I promise we won't spam you more than once a month with those CatchUp Newsletters).

Just FYI: you can usually expect an answer here in minutes but in a couple of hours, almost certainly. ;)
