Auto Page Numbering Please! which could also mean

Auto Page Numbering Please! which could also mean

Postby cmeed » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:52 am

An obvious request and a MUST for LO is Auto Page numbering. I'm adding page after page as i see the benefits of Lo working with sketchup, not having a way to auto page number is ridiculous, the amount of time it takes for a simple task as this.

An extension to this idea, is page titling. a text box on your LO page that would give the title of your page - what ever you've titled each page in the page window appears in a box, change that title in the page window and that automatically changes the text box - and vice verse (maybe)
Add to this, option such as
Date box
Time box
I'll let other people decide what extra boxes they need, my needs are simple for the time being.

cheers

I do not use Layout at all, but the other day TIG updated an old tool that may help. Here is a link to the thread, and see his response to the request:

That would not work in LO (also, there is no ruby plugin function in LO yet).

Yea, Gaieus:
I kind of figured(in the back of my mind-what little there is) that SU and LO were significantly different that SU plugins would not work about 5 minutes after my reply. Then, I thought oh well I will sit and wait for correction. Better to have this reiterated than to sit in doubt and ignorance. The best part is that others get the benefit of this exposition.

Yes yes yes - auto page number would be such a huge time saver!
Also better control of PDF export so you can export each page as a separate PDF and name it differently would be a big help.

You can export individual pages as single sheet PDF's. When you the option box opens simply select which sheet or sheets you want to export.

I really do not see the big deal with auto sheet numbering. It takes all of 3 seconds to edit a sheet number. What am I missing?

I don't think you are missing anything, I guess it depends on how often you need to change your page numbers and what kind of 'functionality' you like built into your applications. If you like to spend time adding page numbers to every page then no problem. Personally I would like not to have to worry about adding or re-ordering page numbers when editing a document. Its one of those small tasks that can easily get overlooked when you are up against a tight deadline or working on a document with lots of pages. If you have clients (or bosses) who can't make up their minds you can end up re-doing the page numbers on a document over and over and over and ... I think there are better things to spend my time doing and if the program Im using can help me then all the better.
Swings and round-abouts really but most other applications that have 'pages' allow you to add sequential page numbers and determine on what page the numbers should start . . Its a handy function and one that I and plenty of other users would been glad was there.
The PDF export is another handy feature that exists in other apps and its a massive time saver. Being able to export a PDF and have it reference the name of a page in the outputted PDFs file name is another huge time saver when you are under pressure . . . its just about trying to speed the process up, enter data the minimum number of times and make processing of a document and quick as possible with minimal margin for user error. I think most people would rather spend their time using LO and SU to do design work rather than re-shuffling page numbers and re-naming PDFs. :D

Page numbering (no matter how small thing it may seem) has been requested many times already. And I agree that if (when) it ever gets implemented, it would be important to determine on which page it starts. Here for instance, you never "count" the cover page and #1 is the next page (first page "inside").

Well for us American Architects, we have an industry standard we follow, so you never end up with a consistent numbering of sheets:

Site plans are A1.1, A1.2............Floor Plan: A2.1, A2.2....... Elevations and Sections A3.1, A3.2.......... And so on. So you never end up having to renumber the entire set if you change something. So, coming up with simple page numbering would probably not be so simple for anyone following AIA standards for construction document order.

If page numbering ever happens in LO you might be given the option to add prefixes to your page numbers. This is possible to do in InDesign and you could arrange page numbers exactly as you have described below - with a chapter number prefix for the type of drawing (1 for site plan, 2 for floor plan, 3 for section etc) and then the page numbers could be generated as you add pages. Its a really handy feature of indesign and would be really handy in LO - but as Gaieus said this has been asked for many times, just hoping that if its said enough the next release of LO might include this feature and save me having to manually do it!
