SU8 - WISHLIST

SU8 - WISHLIST

Postby idraft » Sun Nov 16, 2008 11:21 pm

To the Google SU team.

Please consider this function in SU8 next time a release is due. This is a brillant 3D sketching tool undeveloped, but operational with a tablet for sketching in 3D.

My guess is that if google doesnt snap this function up someone other 3D CAD production software company will and fast?
What do you think?

I would like to see the state of DCs saved with the scene data. That way a door could be opened from one scene to another, etc. Even better would be if the action of the DC (door) were spread out over the frames created from one scene to the next.
Have fun...

2 simple things:
- middle between 2 points while in drawing accesible from contextual menu
- snap to tangents for curvy elemnts such as circles and arcs

this:
ya know when you make a sphere you select the edge? i wanted a tool like freehand but easier too use like the you click one place then another and it would all be one line
dont ask why i want that

Dear All,

It would be an advance if when lathing a profile about a centreline the entities so created were proper circles instead of circles made up of individual segments. I spend a lot of time finding centres and reconstructing circles after lathing profiles.

Hi Kevin,

You actually do not need to select the edge just the face to make a sphere (if I understand your wish correctly): altogether 6 clicks to make a sphere (including drawing the circles):

Bob; true that it would be nice if an extrusion (of any kind, not just lathing) would NOT explode curves, circles and such entities (if that's what you mean).

Dear Google,

Scrap the whole whishlist and get busy making SU adapted to nowadays technology first, will ya .
GET THAT HIGH POLY COUNT THING RUNNING.....pppplease? (multicore, 64 bit, Large Adres Awareness, ...)

My 1000 dollar render engine(s) are CRAP tools without you guys fixing the ability to get bigger scenes going fluently.
The daily frustration of having 50% modeling time and 50% 'waiting' time for SU to get responsive again is getting out of hand....
It is massively UNPRODUCTIVE .

Use dynamic components!!!it will save you more time than high poly support... lol :)

Just joking. My wishlist it's prety simple and i don't ask nothing with inovation:

1- Multicore suport (why is layout multicore and sketchup singlecore?)
2- 64 bits suport
3- a new or modified engine that as the shadow bug fixed and uses the things said above to support high polys
4- sketchup scenes that save the position of components and points (because points defines lines that define faces alowing some basic animation)
5- Put the same line tools that layout has and make the existing one work properly (like offset)
6- make the import\export 3d model work and at least add obj import to the option

And that's it. I don't even ask for some more mapping tools because i don't want to ask for too much...

Oh and google guys if you could keep an eye on the nvidia CUDA technology (and SLI and CROSSfire) in the meantime it would be really nice...let's try to be one step ahead this time instead of two step back

That is the perfect wishlist!
I couldn't agree more.
The next SU version should be all about performance and optimisation.

couldn't agree more Simon B. I'm also still waiting for the (real) release of sketchup 7...

Oh! and i forgot: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, just put back the navigation back botom in the materials/texture browser!! Who the hell had the ideia to remove it in the first place?!? i don't know how you make the decisions and test your own software Google, but it seriously need a drastic change...

And if you could make dynamic components convert the measures from the imperial to the metric system (and viceversa) it would be nice (not everyone uses the imperial system...)

I'd like to see the state of DCs being saved with each scene, so going from scene to scene would trigger the state change.

#4 on your list about scenes saving component locations AND point location - seems like something ruby could do, right? That might be a pretty impressive ruby script if someone dared to figured it out.

Chris Fullmer
Are you sure about that? A ruby like that would be a realease as great as Whaat's Subdivide&smoth was. But i think if it's possible to do it using just ruby i don't know if would work as fast and stable as it should because it would have to save the location in space of each point using skethcup scenes and that would use a lot of memory or something right?for high poly models at least. And the maping of each face could be a problem (a minor one) with a face changing its shape in the animation.

But i know ruby as much i know coking... and the only thing i can do in the kitchen it's juice... :roflmao: So it probably can be done (i hope so!any ruby master hearing me? :D )

But a plugin like these would even allow us animating transformations and other things...allrigh i'm gonna stop talking about these because i'm starting to drool...

No, I'm not certain, but it seems like it is within the abilities of ruby. Look at the animation of DC's. They are the same idea, just not tied together with scenes. And you have to program the animation through scale, rotation, and x,y,z positioning. It would be cool if it were more keyframe oriented and tied together closely with scenes.

It would be nice to have a 3D text tool that can place letters along a curved path...with adjustable spacing....and smoother line quality.

Another:
when i get a high poly model, when i rotate it the textures turn off and (some) groups turn into boxes. WTF? so my other wish is that this STOPS.

KS, this is a feature really. It means you can keep orbiting without SU grinding to a halt while it tries to redraw textures etc.

I would wish that the Styles window had an easy way of switching between the standard and Sketchy Edges modes, in addition of the clumsy mixing of features from an other style.

Hello everyone,

My wishes for Sketchup 8 would be:

1. native multi core support - obvious reasons, it had be asked for by a lot of people here
2. native 64-bit support - same thing, with some performance gains hopefully :)
3. mirror tool - this would be a tool that mirrors a component on an axis, I've been modeling a train recently (still not completely finished), and its a pain to have to make all the components twice, once for each side.

I'm not sure if there is anything that resembles this mirror tool, I've just recently started using su 7 and I may not be completely clear with all its features, though I watched all the tutorial movies.

I was kind of disappointed with su 7, because of lack of multi core and 64 support, but hopefully the developers are working on them.
Looking forward to version 8 :)

Hi Seppe,

Mirroring is possible in two "native" ways in SU:
  • right click on a component and > Flip (long any axis you wish)
  • or scale it by -1
And of course there are plugins that "know" even more...

And yes, performance improvement (achieved by any means) has been a wish for long :thumb:

Hey,

Ok, I will try them both on a separate model :) to see how exactly each tool works.

Thanks.

One more tip with the scale tool however:
  1. click on the component you want to mirror and make a copy (Ctrl+C)
  2. Use the scale tool to mirror it
  3. Go to Eit > Paste in place to get the original half back. (I have even assigned a hotkey to Paste in place - Shift+Ctrl+V) - it'ss o useful and often use by me since I learnt the trick from Plot Paris).

I hope that SU 8 will see a significant development of dynamic components. In particular, I'd like to see dynamic components have the ability to open browser windows within SketchUp in a fashion controlled by parameters within the dynamic component. With Google now having their own web browser (Chrome) I would think this might be reasonably easy to do. From an educational perspective alone this capability would open up numerous interesting possibilities for creating interactive immersive learning environments within SketchUp.

With hope that '09 will bring more interesting capabilities to SU 8.
